How much longer will ps4/xbox one be next gen?

Recommended Posts

This has kind of been bugging me a bit, these consoles have been out for about 2 years now and we still call them next gen, how many years does a console have to be out to be a current gen system?

The PS4 and Xbox One are just over a year old, so for many people they're still next-gen. Even though they're really the current-gen, not everyone makes that transition right away. There are still games coming out on the PS3 and 360, so maybe when that stops people will finally start calling the PS4/XBO current-gen.

The thing with consoles is that companies lose money to get the prices down to compete with other companies. Companies end up making up for the loss of the consoles through games and services. So, you won't see many updates with consoles taking place until about every 7 years or so.

However, with Nintendo trying to make a comeback, and NVIDIA trying to get into the game (along with AMD in 2016), and the possibility of Occulus Rift and a few other niche companies trying to up the evolution of gaming to an entire new level, we might see another next-gen console from Microsoft and Sony in the next 3-4 years, rather than a typical longer wait time.

There's actually talk about a PS5 and whatever the hell the next Xbox will be called coming out earlier, like Cap said. Seems kind of crazy since it took 7-8 years for the Wii U, PS4, and XBO, but there may be a need for it based on the hardware lifecycle. If consumers agree is a different matter, imo.

Now that the main consoles are X86 I imagine we'll see a lot faster refresh cycle on them.

If we do it will likely KILL their market.  One of the main reasons for the success of the console market is the buy it and no need for upgrades/new systems every few years.  I'm sure they can get buy with a shorter life-cycle than before, but with the number of people who still haven't made the move from the 360/PS3 despite it being a huge update and many years after launch I don't see people or developers supporting the 3-4 versions you would end up with "in transition" during a console's life.

As for the Next Gen/Current Gen thing I would say most of that will die off once everyone stops making AAA titles for the 360/PS3.  There sadly are several in the mix still releasing early this year (I almost typed next year :D) so probably once the consoles have ACTUALLY been out for two years the "next gen" bs will have been dropped.

With that said most of us here are already on next gen PC Master Race FTW
