Toying with Idea of a New PC

Hey,

 

So if anybody saw my other topic in Monitors & Video cards you will have seen I have recently got hold of a 3rd 2007FP monitor and am now playing with Eyefinity.

My system plays my older games just fine at 60-70 FPS.

However newer games are a no go.

 

Currently there is no new game I want to play. However I am eagerly awaiting GTA V.

Would love to play this Eyefinity!

 

So this made me wonder over to overclockers.co.uk and start putting a new rig together.

 

Been out of the loop for so long, not 100% whats good anymore!

 

Interested in some pointers.

Machine will have following requirements:

 

Game @ 4800 x 1200 (Eye candy turned up)

Want to avoid multi-GPU setups. CFX hasnt been great

Needs to be silent. (Under load bit of noise is fine)

 

Here is what I threw together:

 

CPU: Intel I7- 3770 - 3.4Ghz -

I'd check the sockets on that MB/CPU combi, if I remember correctly the i7 3770K is 1155 and the Z97 boards are 1150 for Intel Core 4XXX?

 

I think for the resolution you will be gaming at with as you say 'eyecandy turned up' you'll want to go with something much more powerful than a 770. Maybe AMD R9 290X or GTX780Ti if you are that adverse to CrossFire/SLI.

Euro is correct.  Can't put a 3xxx series CPU on a z97 board.  If you are set on the 3770, you will have to get an 1155 socket board.  Otherwise you will need a 4th gen intel CPU to fit a z97 board.  A 770 will be able to game at that resolution, but you will not be able to turn on all eye candy.  You would need to SLI, or get a more powerful single GPU as Euro stated.  Good news is your existing PSU will easily handle 2x 770's or a 780 ti.

xPETE, since you have picked a Z97 based board, you'll need a socket 1150 CPU.  The good news is that you can pick up an i5 4670K for less money than the socket 1155 processor you originally chose.  The K series gives you the added benefit of some simple overclocking if you want to go down that road.

You could also save some money on the memory by going with TeamGroup DDR3 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 (2x8Gb)

Now take the money that you've saved on the processor and the memory and upgrade the video card choice to GTX 780 or R9 290.

The extra cores don't help with gaming at all.  Should there be a time games are coded to utilize more than 4 cores, then maybe.  But that day isn't today.  You would save some money, but sacrifice some performance, power consumption, and thermals if you go AMD.  Not an "Intel fanboy" by any means as I have an AMD build and an Intel build, I just go off of the numbers.

If gaming is going to be a high priority and you're not interested in raw power / benchmarks then an AMD based rig would be a viable alternative to save some money.  And even though there might not be a lot of apps or games that can fully appreciate an 8-core processor right now, that will surely continue to change moving forward.

 

You could go with an AMD FX-8350 Black Edition CPU and Socket AM3+ motherboard.

 

The GTX 780 will be perfect for your setup, no need to dump a ton of cash in the Ti.

 

In fact, if you wanted to get really adventurous you could go AMD across the board;
