don't forget the fact that vista eats up 4gb in seconds. If your going to try vista, why not just get the pre-built waco posted for $300.

hell, go find a used computer on craiglsit for $50. I just sold one with windows 7 on it.

that looks fine to me.... I'd probably try to find a Sata drive on the cheap if his is IDE.

I was thinking a 500gb SSHD but I'd more than likely be better off with a $50 500gb wd caviar blue drive?

I wouldnt even try a SSD or SSHD on XP. it can be done but its a negligible effort that usually results in a low-term life drive. I know a lot of netbooks came with XP and a SSD and had short life spans on the drives so you could probably Google XP and SSD/SSHD and make the decision for yourself.

If i was going to build it for a relative or an older person I;d put a spindle drive on it. just for the sole fact who ever installs the OS becomes the tech support and if you dont live very close it may become a PITA everytime there is an issue... my honest opinion.

What about adding vista for a $50 extra cost?

I just don't understand what's wrong with 7 or 8? I've been watching this thread and all I see so far is spending a lot more to try and build an old machine for an old person...

Give the poor guy a system with security -- he won't like it at first, but at least his stuff will be safe.

Windows 7 is $100 extra.

So the $300 machine with Windows 8.1 is out of the question...why?

Because the main point of this thread is to get opinions on parts as said a thousand of times.

I am working on an older comp running vista business and I am not sure if I am ready to shoot it or myself with the problems I am having doing a single full back up so I can safely install the updated payroll software on it

I would advise against vista and go with the $300 win 8 machine

And that's coming from someone who hates win8

Building a custom isn't as cost saving as it once was that's the point of so many pointing out prebuilt boxes. If your going to build a killer gaming rig then yes you can save money, but if your looking at a business class comp then no. This is why I have a $500 Lenovo tower on my desk at work. I ordered it off amazon with win 7 pro preinstalled so I payed a little more than for a win 8 machine.

The fact we are trying to help you save money and your not paying attention to it is astounding. We aren't saying your stupid or anything like that, but you don't seem to see the help we are offering to make your life easier.

It's a good entry level, low cost, low power, no frills platform. Preforms great with just 4GB of 1600 ram ( note: it's only single channel ram).  I did a review of it over on OCC's sister site Neoseeker ( http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/amd_athlon_5350_asus_am1ia/ )

So the question is:

Insecure XP based machine for $200 with zero waraanty and no support

Or $300 Dell box with the safety of 8.1, a warranty, Dell support, and better hardware...

This is not a hard choice...

It very well could be if money is an issue... ;)

Unless the guy's bank account gets wiped out since he has XP on his computer.

Bottom line is his uncle is going XP with a home built computer. If he buys a pre-built then the option is not on the table because you will not be able to purchase a prebuilt with XP. It just boggles the mind to think that the point has been made over and over and the horse beat to dust. Any DIY build is going to be XP based. Its not your money but his and if he feels that XP is what he want then let him have it.  Everyone has made their point. Give the man some options without discussing the OS as has been requested  multiple times throughout this thread.  Yes XP sucks and we know why, give it a rest.

It just seems wrong to give advice when you know it's bad advice.

I refuse to advise someone to do the wrong thing. It'd be like me telling you to use peanut butter as thermal paste -- it just doesn't make sense.

It's his place to advise him otherwise as his family computer geek. He knows better. Just as I wouldn't allow someone to use IE6 to browse the web...I wouldn't allow a family member to jeopardize their online security by using XP now that it is unsupported.

Also, I'm cranky and sitting in an airport so I apologize for being blunt.
