ir_cow Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 This was normal when I worked at DirecTV. people would call about unrelated things all the time. Most of the time they called about the internet being out and I had to explain, TV and internet are not the same thing.

Andrewr05 Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 It really is amazing how compacent people get with technology. Another thing, I've always meant to bring this up, but I never remember to. Did anyone have a parent who got them into computers when they were younger but is now functionally computer illiterate? My dad was always into computers growing up, we'd build computers together, I'd go with him to fix his friends computers and he was always upgrading to new stuff. He'd give me the old parts from coworkers computers or his old hardware and since I was like 7-8 I've always grown up with my own frankenstein creation of a PC. He fucking got me into computers and taught me what I know, now I need to coax him into the control panel and walk him through basic stuff. He runs a 24" LCD at 800x600 and runs Norton, Registry Mechanic and a whole bunch of other crap and insists on it being better that way. Its his computer and all but damn it frustrates me how complacent even he has gotten after all these years...
ir_cow Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Yeah my dad is similar, while he didn't build his own stuff he was programing in DOS. Now he owns a Mac because he can't figure out the "new" windows. when I say new I mean Vista.
pdbuzz Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I've heard number one from both of my parents almost verbatim; the exception is that it's always (to this day) 'foxfire'.

Phil Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Mrs. Phil has been using computers since 1980 and spends most of her computer time cursing at the screen. Her nemesis is Yahoo mail. I set her up with a Gmail account complete with contacts ready to go but she won't use it.
ir_cow Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I know someone who won't use anything but Internet explorer 6. she's goes to great lengths to use it by uninstalling IE 11 on windows 8 and somehow finding a copy if IE 6 and installing it . she says the new look is to hard to figure out... but she knows how to uninstall it. LOL, I wish her luck. The wheels are already coming off old versions of IE, it won't be long until it doesn't work at all. When I do XP reinstalls I have to get IE8 from a 3rd. party source, Windows Update won't even talk to IE6.
AkakmanH Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Number 8 is the main reason I stopped helping friends fix/rebuild their computers. When something broke six months later it was always my fault.

Yup, thats how alot of people are, my mom and her brainless friends think I'm computer illiterate because I don't have a job at geeksquad or a degree even though I built this Edited April 7, 2014 by kennethk
