About to buy a gun

Recommended Posts

Well, the search is done! I nearly went with the Kahr CM9, but I just thought the S&W Sheild 9mm would be a better choice and went with that. I'm picking it up and paying for it tomorrow. So excited to own my own gun and take it to the range! Also, does anyone recommend a specific type of ear protection, or is it all about the same?

I have cheapest set harbor freight offered, it was like $3 or something. They work great lol

Good choice. You will be far happier with the shield. Get the highest decibel reduction rated muffs you can afford. Here are two that I have. Both very comfortable with good seal around the ears and don't break the bank. Electronic muffs are really nice to have. Some can be expensive but there are decent and affordable electro muffs out there.

Electronic 30db reduction at a good price

Non electric 33db reduction for an awesome price

Makarovs are pretty weak compared to a 9x19mm. There's a chart on Wikipedia with lb ft measurements of different calibers.

Shot placement is more important.

Shot placement AND more power would be even better.

Shot placement is more important. You'll get out of the "more power" phase once you gain more knowledge and training. Probably the biggest misconception firearm related.

+1  Guns ain't like puters where moar power is better. A bullet traveling at 100fps will hurt just as much as one traveling at 1000fps. Besides, a slower moving bullet has less chance of passing through generating less damage.

Unless it is is a hollow point :D Won't pass through but makes whoever is attacking you wish they were not attacking you(hopefully)

I am now the proud owner of a S&W M&P Shield 9mm! :D It's only had 50 rounds through it, I got it for $400. MSRP is $490 and they're impossible to find.

Damn, pretty game good deal. That's cheaper than I paid for my 22A-1, how'd you score such a deal?? NJ sucks lol

I just found a couple private sellers selling real cheap. Jacksonville is pretty redneck, lots of guns so the prices are low. I also found a Kahr CM9 and holster for $380 that I considered (only 100 rounds through it) and a Glock 26 for $500 with a holster, a bunch of extra mags, and 25 high quality 9mm defense rounds.

The shield came with the 7 round mag (more concealable) and an 8 round mag (makes the gun a little taller than a glock 17). It also came with a lock. The gun was manufactured in late May 2013. Pics coming soon!

Oh yeah, definitely something you don't want to get shot by. I like how light it is, and I really like that they include an extended mag which is more comfortable for range shooting. I have small hands so even the smaller mag is enough for me to get a good grip. Walmart was out of 9mm ammo, but when I find some I'll take it to the range and test it out.

Glad you got a good deal, but as with other potentially dangerous or expensive things be real careful buying guns from private sellers. Especially complicated ones like this compact, too many little pieces that could be damaged. At the very least i would ask to meet them at a range and put a few rounds through it, if not get a gun smith to look it over.

Have fun, and if you find 9mm buy a bunch and send me a box =p

You can't get ammo for range use from the range??

This is true, maybe a full break down (for practice and getting to know the inside of your gun) is in order and then cross check the parts and their functionality.

The public range I've frequented has been burnt down for a couple months now but the upside is they sell ammo out the door now (usually 100rd/day limit on the most common handgun calibers).

Not sure if serious or not but I can maybe get you some 9mm if you're in that much of a need.

I got a nice stash of 22LR due to this fact ;).

Haha, nah man i'm good, unless someone provokes me to burn through my stash in a hurry. Just haven't seen it on the shelves for a while. But 22LR... now that is pure gold around here. Still sitting on half a case i bought a year ago, i have resold more than i shot.

Let me know!

The range is right around the block from my school, so once classes are over for the semester, I'll likely not be down there as much.
