nns Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I am looking for a switch with DHCP and a 6-8 1Gbps LAN ports. This is for a simple network connection without internet connection. I am currently using D Link DGS-1008D. I would prefer something with DHCP to save me the trouble of assigning IPs and to get Windows to detect the network properly. Please suggest if I should use a managed switch and if yes, which one. Regards
dr_bowtie Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I dont know of any switches that have DHCP.... all you should need is a router and a switch. That's all i use when I have no net and everything set on auto it assigns IPs for lan play... networks just fine
Nerm Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Any switch rated for layer2+ or layer3 should do what you want, however those switches are not cheap and for your purpose I would probably recommend a normal layer2 switch and use an old PC running a dhcp server capable OS (eg. linux) or a basic off the shelf router. Waco Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 All you need is a super cheap router and any cheap 1 Gbps switch. No need for a real layer 3 switch!
nns Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Thanks! I was just worried if adding a slow (100 Kbps) router to the setup would slow it down. If so, please suggest a 1Gbps router. Also, could you give me an idea as to the cost of the said layer3 switches.
Waco Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 You don't need a Gigabit router - all it will do is handle DHCP.
