punking Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 (edited) I have an HTPC that I'm retiring, but I was thinking of using the parts to make a media server that was expandable over time. My worry is that because it was an HTPC the parts will suck to much power for it to be on mostly 24/7 to use sickbeard, SABNZB etc and provide media for XBMC. These are the components:Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core ProcessorGIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel MotherboardCORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power SupplyADATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory ModelAny advice would be appreciated. I also need a new case because it's in an Antec Fusion at the moment. I was thinking of this one Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-BL Black Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case . Thankyou Edited May 8, 2013 by punking
EuroFight Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 You could probably underclock the processor and change to a lower spec, more modern video card which should save some power. Otherwise you could reuse some of the parts in the new build (e.g. PSU)
DanTheGamer11 Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 (edited) I don't think a Micro ATX mobo and mini itx case go together well :3 Unless you're up for case modding and like the outgrown look Edited May 8, 2013 by DanTheGamer11
punking Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I don't think a Micro ATX mobo and mini itx case go together well :3 Unless you're up for case modding and like the outgrown look Well I'm handy with a dremel! I never noticed that when I was looking at the case. What a rookie mistake.
potatochobit Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 you are running onboard graphics? as long as you don't overclock the processor and let it run on it's own it won't use much electricity
