Using Dual outputs - Video and Audio

I have a PowerColor 7850 video card. My monitor does not have HDMI, so I am cabled to it with a DL DVI-D cable. Now I would like to add sound. I have a "sound bar" amplified speaker system with a HDMI input (and pass through HDMI output). Can I cable this to the 7850 video card HDMI output, while I am still using the DVI output connector for my video? So, one cable DVI video, and one cable HDMI audio. I am sure someone must have tried this or similar already.

does your monitor have an input for a standard 3.5mm jack for sound? If so I would suggest just running that to the on board sound ports (Im assuming you dont have a separate sound card if you are trying to use in monitor speakers)

You can try it like this:

 

PC -> [via hdmi] -> Soundbar -> [via HDMI to DVI-D converter] or [via DVI to HDMI cable] -> Monitor.

 

If that HDMI port is a real 'pass-through' port, it should work.
