RANT APPROACHING!

As I mentioned in the just bought thread I have a new laptop with windows 8 as the OS. After a fair amount of consideration I would rather have windows 7. Anyway,if I double click on a .avi file (example) the OS brings up xbox video or whatever it is as opposed to windows media player, which is one of those cute full screen "apps". Of course it errors out. Go figure.  Thus I get a screen showing me the latest movies and related BS. In order to get back to my "desktop" I have to mash esc, which brings me to the new "start menu". Give me minimize / maximize / close or else.  Why are we trying to run an operating system that is https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS529US529&q=optimize&spell=1&sa=X&ei=jjtiUfTWI4WUjAK2g4CwDQ&ved=0CDQQBSgD">optimized   for a. touch screen enabled device that does not have a touch screen?

Here comes the  fun part. This laptop has the F keys mapped to the "media" keys. Therefor, it I want "alt F4" to close that "start menu" I must hit FN + ATL +"F4" Its the whole http://youtu.be/RCOlf_7BT-I">cloverleaf period space bar thing all over again, damn it.

Okay, end rant. now for some logic.

Win8 is great if you have a touchscreen. If not, well then, it's a bit of a hassle.

But as for your "F Key" issue, that's not really a Windows issue, that's a laptop issue. A lot of laptop manufacturers use the Function keys for additional functions like the aforementioned media keys.

I hate f-keys, but at least my laptop gives me the option to set the f-key function as the main function, or the secondary crap (like volume etc) as the main one.

In all honesty all these gripes can be fixed by configuring it otherwise in your admin tools I've been dicking with server 2012(windows 8 for servers) and all my gripes have been cured just by configuration, getting to the start menu is annoying but what i find more annoying than that is in server you have to alt+ctrl+del to get to the shut down option and explain why your shutting down each time -_- so dumb...I like how the start menu is laid out though its powerful and pretty just takes patience and allot of digging to get it right.  No different than vista imo

You guys realise you can reverse the f-keys?

I reverse them on all the laptops I use so to use media and shortcuts I must hold the f-key first. That way all the f-key functions dont let in the way of normal windows operation.
