Not sure if it will help your problem but at this point it sounds like it wouldn't hurtI had a Nosy HDD was rattling and its nice and quiet now

Interesting i'll have to check that out. Tyvm.

The the more i research the issue specifically regarding aion. The more I'm not sure an ssd will help me all that much. Might not be worth the money i'm thinking. I'm probably just cpu limited with my amd phenom which doesn't play nice, especially with older game engines. Even people who have switched to i7's and ssd's still complain about constant lag spikes in the heavy populated areas. The ones who aren't lying to themselves that is. Of course its mostly amd people complaining.

"we still need single layer processing for remedial tasks" is a common saying that makes me despise intel. who are the same people who say "the future of super computing is parallel processing" yet they do everything to undermine it, they still don't even make their own gpcpus still, when they promised thats what the xeon phi was gonna be before they scrapped that idea....not surprisingly.

Programmers just can't keep up with the new hardware...even windows 7 just feels like an extra bloated pos compared to xp. With less freedom and privacy and slower performance and horrible driver support. I guess it has a better firewall if that even means anything, and the pretty aero lol. And superfetch, indexing, shadowcopying and defragging galore that never stops in win 7 to ensure your hdd has a short life, especially with a virus scan that wants to scan your pc all day...lmao. I feel like pcs are all a scam nowadays. OR just striving for things that they can't achieve cause they are fantasy and not possible unless they truly commit to a long term project and not the fast buck with the false promise of patches.

I know i sound like a conspiracy theorist, and i prolly already wore out my welcome here, but Intel has too much clout and is holding the human race back encouraging so many myths and complacency.

Pc gaming died years ago.

You sound so opinionated when you talk about pc gaming being dead.

It's still very much alive, there are tons of popular games playable on the pc where on the console it would fail. As for 64 man BF3 matches I have no issues finding them, I usually just have to wait 2-3 mins in queue before getting into the server...

Companies always go for the fastest method for profit that's no surprise at all... Windows 7 is fine, we can't be using Win XP forever anyway a OS change is expected eventually. Wndows XP also had tons of issues upon release, the only reason its so streamline and smooth now is because of the many years of tweaks its gotten. Virus's that pretend to be virus scanner have been around FOREVER now, thats not a very good example... If you feel like PCs are a scam then why do you bother gaming on one? Reach a problem? Find a solution, negativity just hinders your ability to do anything effectively.

Hey Fred i'm hearing chirps coming from my vid card where the power cords plug in when its supposed to be idle. Are you secretly folding on my pc with some secret hidden partition not recognizeable by windows? HAHAHA.

I'm only kidding Fred. :)

and ya personal anti virus comes to mind. Thee was a bad virus going around florida a couple years ago. Would hijack their internet and try to force them to buy the program. I was telling people to download Malwarebytes in safe mode which freed the pcs at my uncles job and my friends daughters pc. I live in NY. Thats still one of my fav programs.

Norton suckered me in 2009 after they amazed me at how little resources they used, when i disliked them for years. I thought it was perfect for alot of older pcs. But i no longer trust them anymore, it was all a scam and they are back up to their old tricks again crippling systems. Doesn't matter if they don't use any memory if they are masking processes using lots of cpu and hdd. Causing memory leaks with every other process on your system. their 2009 version was the bomb though. Too bad they are evil again.

and good point windows 7 only just got service pack 1 and xp has service pack 3.

Its all constructive criticsim Fred thats all. These complacent programmers....hinder my abilities. I'm glad Steve Jobs is dead, and I'm glad Warren Buffet saved Bill Gates' soul! Be for the humans! lol Its all about the color green in this new age. I think i'm getting overtired, don't mind me...lol.

EDIT: just wanna add, thats not a water spicket. Thats a wire that dudes pluggin in. Goodnight everyone.

no lol.

In Bf3 it appears to be a bug in game. That was also present in bc2 before they fixed it. But since there is not many people complaining about it in bf3.   I think because they don't realize it.    And most people have so much more other technical difficulties i doubt it will get fixed.

what i do is just avaoid 1000 ticket servers and try not to chat in the chatbox,  which means only half a dozen servers in all of north america out of only a couple dozen.   so sad.   But by not chatting I play and hope others don't chat too much as well and don't add to the buffer size.

In aion everybody lags no matter what system they have apparently.   I see loads of threads about it with people on all types of systems.   Of course you get a couple guys that claim they never do......But I think they are delusional or not as picky. (sorry for this comment)     this is why the playerbase dropped off and the game is free now, contary to what you would like to believe.    64 bit o/s and multithreaded cpus just run like shit with these older engines and Its a shame.

Maybe i'm too picky, the game runs fine when i'm not in the big city or around alot of other player.  But it annoys the shit out of me and can't be healthy for the system.

I mean these games are 32 bit. won't take up more then 2 gigs of system ram. Aion doesn't even use any vram man lol.    I haven't even seen it go over 300.   when in bf3 on high settings it uses almost 900mb and almost 700 mb on medium. It seems programmers still dont' like programming for mutlthreaded cpus or parallel processing period.  I guess it takes too long.  We buy this new hardware for nothing.  Its all a joke.

Switching to an intel based system might help a little.....but it would probably be minimal and not even worth it.

One issue i just fixed was when investigating my pc i found out i was getting high dpc latencies with ndis.sys tcpip.sys and storport.sys.   It was all so strange i originally thought it was my drivers.   The storport one is why i was also thinking my hdd.    But then i found out it only happens after i install utorrent on a fresh windows install.   I downloaded one program.  auslogics.  becaues defraggler has issues with windows 7.   Didn't even have a keygen in it.  I think its shareware.   So then i thought it was windowsfirewall,    because shutting down all my security software and rebooting the comptuer stopped it.  I thought maybe windows 7 had problems handling the tons of connections from the torrent tracker,  which might still be trying to connect to me when i have utorrent closed and maybe my router was not closing the upnp port or w/e.  Though nothing was showing up in my programs.

I now found out it was malwarebytes all along.   For some reason it just starts freaking out after  I installed and starting using utorrent. while downloding for the first time it started instantly.   Even when i was not downloading torrents for days malwarebytes was still causing lots of random dpc spikes.  when opening up webpages etc..  But,  just like everything else this also has nothing to do with the game and has no efffect on my system performance.    Who knows maybe i do have some secret spyware that might as well be governmental on my computer that even a low level format writing 0s to my whole drive won't get rid of,  and getting a new drive would fix my problems.   It is a 1tb drive so who knows what could be on there.   The fact there are not many savy computer users out there anymore.  Means more and more viruses go undiscovered.   I tired to report the issue to malwarebytes,  but once they hear i'm using utorrent i'm immediately a pos and it servers me right lol.  Lets just say its no longer my fav,   I will still use it as an offline scanner,   but not worth the money for the realtime protection.  In fact its suspicious.

btw I'm against pirating of video games.  I download movies for my little nieces and my parents mostly.

maybe i should run memtest for 24 hours or at least 7 hours.

I'm just trying to find a cheap 64gb ssd drive somewhere.  I'm crossing my fingers it will help.

Hey Renigade, this guy is awsome! I watched that video.

and I'm subscribing to this podcast.

http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm

thanks for putting me on!

did it work for you?
no i had it running for 7 hours. then i got an Division overlow error 5672. Exactly at the halfway point. GRC says my bios is bad. But it seems to be a common error with the program. Many people think it has to do with some of the newer bigger hdds. I do have a tb drive.

http://iamyouruser.blogspot.com/2006/02/spinrite-division-overflow-error.html

http://www.grc.com/sr/kb/badbios.htm

the program is 8 years old apparenlty.

I also get a warning about an ultra dma CRC error count from from hd tune. THey suggest its due to a bad cable, so i just switched to a new one today. Didn't make a diff in my performance though thats for sure. same benchmarks same game stutters in the mmo in crowded areas. I mean my hdd is just constantly loading in these mmos.

I did recenlty update my bios because sometimes my pc would not boot when i clicked restart from windows. And i thought it would help with performance in games. Then i found out it was an error with this hdd, and i did a firmware update. Now i'm wondering if i should downgrade back to the older bios. I'm just a little wary of doing that. Because the dell update program you run from windows wont let you downgrade. I would have to do it manually from a usb key to get around that. With no official instructions from dell, but supposedly possible. But i'm a little nervous about that and doubt it would even fix my issue. I only started playing mmo games on this pc so i'm not sure the bios update even hindered my performance at all. Its prolly best to stay with the updated version.

I'm thinking also i should run memtest again but this time let it go for 7-8 hours and see if i get any memory errors.

I do notice though when the hdd is loading and i'm stuttering in the game my cpu is spiking. Could this be a cpu issue with the game? I've tried setting affinity and priorities. no diff. I keep going back to thinking the game just doens't like my amd phenom. Or is the hdd causing the cpu spikes? I was researching ssd's. But i would have to get a 128mb one to ensure i can put windows and the mmo on there together. I was hoping a 60 or 80gb would be enough. but theres no way.

Unless i just put the mmo on there. I was thinking i need the O/S on there as well to increase the game performance? or would it make no diff in game performance if i just had only the mmo on it?

Rich - In one of your other threads I mentioned disabling the in-game chat feature.  Did you try that as a work around in BF3?

I put the chat feature to hidden. But the problem is it doesn't truly disable it but it makes it less noticeable. so if the chat buffer gets huge it will still hitch the game even with the chat hidden. Other players i talk to say it doesn't help them, but since you told me that i do put the chat to hidden, and i think it does make it less noticeable. Unless its really bad and people are spamming the chat at the end of a match lol.

I played a bunch of games last night though on high preset settings at 1080p on 64 man. Man this games graphics are awsome. game ran great and no issues. Its just best for me to avoid 1000+ ticket servers and hope people don't chat too much lol. I think putting the chat to hidden helps sometimes also...because i dont' get the urge to chat encouraging others to reply lol. Some people were complaining about lag towards the end of one match I was in but I got no serious lag and no hitching on my end. then again that particular match was not a fly map, so it ran exceptional for me. I do think there is something with the game that causes a match to get laggier as it goes on, especially right at the very end. I always thought it was a heat issue at first but i don't think that is the case. As long as chat buffer doesn't get too big, its not really noticeable on my system.

I just finished running memtest again for about 10 hours with 11 passes and no errors. I did notice though that when i only had the two kingston chips in there. The pc started to get extremely laggy after a while. For example text as i was typing in this thread was lagging behind. I just attributed that to the fact win 7 64bit cannot run right on only 2gb of ram? I do use up to 1.5gb on startup sometimes. Even with just the two samsung 2gb chips i was still getting lots of hdd activity in the mmo game though. I don't think ram is an issue, ironically bf3 uses more ram then these mmo games.

I think lag spike issues in games have to do with my phenom 820 or my hdd controller. Its possible my bios is an issue but i find it unlikely. In fact the latest update i did specifically said it helps windows 7 performance. I think a new hdd might fix my problem but probably not lol. An ssd might be my best upgrade.

All these mmos are plummeting and struggling to stay alive, they are all dropping servers and going free to play for a reason I believe. Yet I am still here searching for ghosts on my machine. I don't know if we can even say mmos are what make pcs better then consoles anymore... its not seeming too realistic.

Its funny....either you get total garbage fps in a game like planetside 2. Or horrible spikes and hitching in games like lotro and aion.

I think WoW and eve online are the only mmos that have lasted and don't have f2p? lol I'm afraid to buy gw2. I hope gw2 releases a demo eventually. I already read alot of complaints about how the world pvp is really laggy on alot of machines. And how people have to wait over 3 hours for queue times!! Thats insanity! I wouldn't even care about low fps in a mmo like gw2, since its not about aim, as long as there is no hitching!

I had a question i wanted to ask in the hardware section. But i'll post it here.

What is the sound that winds up and gives a click when i turn on the pc or come out of sleep. Is that the hdd turning on?

I just recenlty bought a psu replacement. So i'm thinking hdd but could something else be making the click?

Now i'm just confused. I was playing bf3 today and i notice when i join a map. my hdd light going crazy, I actually have way more hdd activity during a match in bf3 then i thought.... but yet i experience no lag or hitching because of it in bf3. wtf? so maybe the hitching in these mmo games have nothing to do with my hdd? Or maybe i'm just loading very little data from bf3 and they don't compare to these mmo games? I dunno.

I'm not a programmer but this is why i just chalk everything up to game coding. Its all mind boggling. BF3 would be totally perfect if they fixed the chat lag bug. But i guess i'm just being too picky. Its still probably the best programmed/optimized game out there right now.
