ClayMeow Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 As i mentioned in another thread, I got a new 56k modem to replace the one i currently have, cause i thought it may be better (hopefully connect faster). Well, I set it up, installing the drivers like they said (they were NOT digitally signed, btw), and then went to connect to the internet thru NetZero, which is what I use. Well, it dials...i hear the sounds of the modem...and it apparently doesn't connect and retries the number 2 more times, before moving to another number in my list. No matter what, it wouldn't connect. In modem system properties, it said it was working properly. And it can Query when i click "Query Modem" also. I thought maybe the drivers were too old, so i reconnected my old modem to download drivers, and downloaded 3 different ones i found...wasn't sure which to use...so i tried em all. and none of em worked. 2 of 'em winXP gave me errors on with the modem, saying it wasn't working properly. So did i just get a lemon, or could it be something else? I used a different PCI slot than what i had my previous modem in because my other modem, when in that slot, used the same IRQ as my agp video card....so i wanted it to get a new IRQ alone....which it did. Could that pci slot be bad? I don't think so...it uses the same bridges and crap as all the others, right? Guess i'll just have to return it. AYoKoNA Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 You might have some driver conflicts with the old 56k and the new, however I wouldn't go through a reformat just for that...
tazwegion Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Setting it to 0x03E8 irq5 will usually result in a conflict with the NIC, and using IRQ7 will interfere with LPT1. Most internal modems are 8 bit cards, therefore they do not use IRQs higher than 7. @ www.faxport.com I'll stick to external modems for now, thanks! As i mentioned in another thread, I got a new 56k modem to replace the one i currently have, cause i thought it may be better (hopefully connect faster). There is a physical speed barrier for dial-up bps caused by the quality of telephone service lines & relative distance between exchanges etc. My fastest ever dial-up speed is 31200 bps... ClayMeow Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 thanks guys. Ayokona, i uninstalled the other modem and drivers before installing the new card...only after it didn't work did i reinstall the old one back. Taz, that's an interesting quote about the IRQs...my current modem is on IRQ 19 and works fine...but my video card also uses 19, so i thought maybe the performance is lower since they're sharing...shrug. and yeah, i know there's a barrier....and it's a known fact that our phone lines suck here...i was just HOPING i could get faster speeds :/. The highest I've gotten is 36k...but right now i'm at 31.2k....it's all random, from 28-36 usually. It just seems my dad's comp gets the higher connections more often than my comp does, and he doesn't have a winmodem, so that's why i thought MAYBE it was cause of that. External modem would probably be easier....but i don't want to spend money on a new dial-up...i'm still holding on to a string, hopin we'll get cable or dsl soon I'm in CS withdrawal and not only that...it kinda sucks that even the simple task of browsing the web takes 2 to 3 times longer. owell, thanks for the help guys my mom went to exchange the modem for a new one since she was goin out in that direction anyways.
