Worthy upgrade or wait? Need advice!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, currently I have a gigabyte p67a-ud4-b3 board with an overclocked i5 2500k @ 4.5GHZ (Hyper 212+ with 2 coolermaster fans in push/pull), 16GB DDR3 1600, and 2 SSD in raid 0. I am looking to see if a 3770K would be a worthy upgrade for the purpose of video encoding only. I dont hardly game or anything else. I was told different opinions from a few different people. Some say to do a Z77 board with the 3770k, Others say to just swap out the chip, Some people even tell me to get a 3930K with a new board. Would it even be a benefit to do anything to upgrade or should I hold off for something new that intel might be putting out?

3930k will be the fastest for encoding, cheapest upgrade would be stick with the same board and get a 3770k

Just depends on how much speed you need, and how much you are willing to spend

An old article of mine: http://computerhardwareupgrades.blogspot.com/search/label/Video%20Encoding

Can you enable Virtu for your encoding?

No point in going Ivy Bridge from Sandy Bridge. If you're running 4.5GHz with an i5 2500K, it's the same as running an i5 3570K at 4.3GHz. However, going to an i7 would help a little with hyperthreading. Really not worth it, though.

From my perspective, it would be cheaper buying another of the same system you currently have as a dedicated encoding machine, than going to a 3930K. That way you can still work while doing the encoding on a different machine.

First I would ask are you upgrading because of a need or an itch? To many people do it for the itch and in the end get buys remorse. Your system as it is, is very quick and the move to a 3770K would be more lateral than upgrade, likely not worth the cost.

Also how much encoding do you do? I mean it must be a LOT to worry about an upgrade around it.

El has given some solid advice, also what video card is in your system? A good video card can take over the encoding chore and do it faster than a CPU with the right software and then give other benefits as well.

From a pure processor perspective I would NOT upgrade, the cost will not be justified in the return.

3770K over 2500K? Only difference I can see is the presence of HT. But I don't think the difference is worth upgrading.

Talking about 3930K, it would be a descent (not that good)upgrade from 2500K, but again, you need to shell out good amount of money.

Thus I would advise you to refrain from upgrading your system, and wait for haswell release and then think about the upgrading your system.
