Whatever you upgrade for the CPU/MB, you know what memory to get. The 2 x 4GB Samsung Extreme Low Voltage Model MV-3V4G3D/US: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096 I'd recommend a used 2500K if found for $120, and an ASUS Z68 or Z77 motherboard if found for $75 used, or slightly higher for open box: Z68 or Z77 The good thing about a budget system as yours, you don't need more than 1 PCIEx16 slot. For a graphics card, an HD 7850 for $150 and overclock that sucker. I got both my MSI HD 7850 Power Editions for $153 each, and they are just crazy performers. I may get excited and really get into this, who knows? What is my cheapest upgrade path as of right now, taking into account that I usually upgrade the CPU a few times over the years? Obviously I want to upgrade to something equivalent (just upgrade to a newer socket, then get better parts later) or better performing system. I like buying used. What I need: CPU Motherboard Memory Things I can keep from my old system: Antec 430W PSU GTX 285 (or I can use a 4750 I 'acquired') Harddrives Antec P182 chassis optical drives etc. My current system, short of the case and power supply and hardrives are all used parts. I know its definitely not the most sensical way to go about it, but I like getting the cheapest used parts I can find and then slowly fine tuning the system how I like it over the next few years. It seems like AMD is the way to go for budget now too (at least from what I've been reading) and there are a metric [expletive]-ton of CPU options for AM3+ as well, from semprons right up to bulldozer chips. DDR3 is dirt cheap too... If you made it this far and haven't yet facepalmed or shaken your head in disbelief then thanks. Should I wait until I have the money to just outright buy a new system all at once? AMD or Intel for an extreme budget build? I think if you want it to last 5 years, a quad core is the only way to go. Maybe overclocking isn't needed, so if you can find a cheap used i5 2300 for $75 most likely when someone decides to upgrade, you can buy this Open Box ASUS P8H61-M LX PLUS for $55.99. That's $131, and you'll be able to find 2x4GB memory for $25 or even $30 no problem. Maybe sell your existing components and grab a HD 7850 to stay under budget. I want this to be the best I can get for the cheapest price. I got an i5 3570K and an ASUS P8Z77-m Pro for $243 shipped. $50 cheaper than if I paid for them at Microcenter with a $50 off special when buying a Z77 motherboard.
