replace a laptop hard drive

Recommended Posts

A cousin asked me a favor to check his laptop (Toshiba M645-S4061) and couldn't say NO because he is good boy.

Initially it was reformat hd and reinstall win7. But while doing the backup data to one of my PCs, began to get the message "Windows has detected a hard disk problem" every ten minutes.

HD is obviously dying so I recommended buying another and he said OK.

This is the first time I disassemble a laptop, so google: "how to open toshiba M645" and got this guide: http://www.irisvista...ptop-base-1.htm

Now I know how to arm and disarm it completely.

But I don't know what HD to buy.

Any sata 2.5" 5400rpm 500gb drive is ok?

For example:

Thanks in advance!

As long as it's SATA and its 2.5", it should work.

Basically the only factor that can change is the storage space.

Only other consideration is rotational speed of platter if that makes any difference to your cousin.

If he wants a little more speed and will spend a little more money the 7200 rpm 2.5 inch sata is faster, or if he really wants speed he could put in an ssd hd.

+1 I've replaced about 6 of this brand myself, some not even a year old.

Indeed, I always liked my friend's satellite (and WAY back, my dad's work toshiba) but those drives really bring it all down

WD Scorpio Black is the only one that comes with a 5 year warranty.

For speed, how much space does he need/use? A Samsung 830 SSD 256 GB has been going about $160-200. Much faster than any HDD and longer battery life (7200 rpm HDD likely to shorten it).

Thin profile 256 GB
