bp9801 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Disney has purchased LucasFilm for $4.05 billion and has set Star Wars Episode VII for a release in 2015, with Episodes VIII and IX each year after. And then maybe more movies in the future. They should just do the Thrawn trilogy and call it a day. Thrawn would be cool, as would Truce, but those take place within 5-6 years of the end of Return of the Jedi. All the original cast is far older. So either they do some masterful CG work to make them all younger, or they set Episodes VII - IX about 300 years into the future. Expanded Universe goes about 140 years past the movies. Now, if they go into the Legacy of the Force novels or even the Legacy comics, that'd be alright (I guess), but I'd just rather it be something set farther into the future. It can't be any worse with George Lucas at the helm - though bless him for making the original IV, V, and VI. Yeah, at least Lucas won't be able to "fix" the originals anymore. It will be interesting to see what stories they end up using for the movies though because, and correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all of the post-RotJ stories unofficial? Meaning none have been recognized by Lucas as, "Yes, that happens." Basically, I'm thinking that with only one exception, they cannot make these movies without irritating one group of fans or another, because they didn't make into film their favorite storyline. However that one exception would be the actually third trilogy Lucas did plan on, and mentioned in at least one interview. As that would be official, who could really complain (unless it's a bad story)? Of course, the notes on that, may not have been part of the bargain. No matter what though, it will be interesting. Also, it will be interesting if Disney realizes, 'Hey, you know what would make us money? Release the original trilogy without the added graphics, newly restored and remastered!' That would be awesome, and I could see it bringing in quite a lot of money for them, as well as giving them brownie points with a fair portion of the fan base. For the most part everyone else views it as canonical, aside from a few contradictions. No matter what though, it will be interesting.
