NoSnipeLimit Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 So I've been working as a Software developer (delphi/c#/php/java/js/etc) for the past 7 years going on 8. I recently changed job, and I still don't feel that sense of something new or exciting or anything really. Its pretty much just another job. Doing what I did at a different place, even if it's a different industry. What would you guys do if you could start your own business, or where would you want to work. rivalary Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 I feel the same way often at my job (which amittedly isn't as advanced as yours), feeling both that I want out of deskside support and into something like you're doing and also I feel like I want to do something simple without stress. However, I've worked the simple jobs and they were more stressful for me due to how boring and unforfilling they were. wevsspot Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 NSL - ever considered working as a contractor or free-lance developer instead of being tied to one single company. You might find some fulfillment owning your own business even if you are doing the same type of work. You might also earn more income and be happier while you're doing it. Haven't had much of a problem with making a good living and being happy in my family. My dad, his dad, and his grandfather were all very happy being businessmen, and all made a living. Fragsman Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Is this a new disease for people who work in IT? My friend feels like you and others who posted here. And well sometimes I feel like him. He got an own software "company" there are 3 guys, 2 of them program. There were another programmer but not anymore. I sometimes do things for them and currently I am developing something. But that's not my main job, in fact I work very little on that so we don't get good money. My main job isnt much fullfilling. I prefer to be a programmer which i'm not in my main work. I kinda test compliance of gaming machines and systems devices in casinos. Most of the time there is no fun doing that, programming for SELF might be the most creative thing but for a company perhaps not. Don't worry I work here since 5 years and well, I think I understand what you feel. My dad has been bus driver for a lot of years and of course he is tired but is a job. Most of jobs are just that. Perhaps in IT we can have more freedom to choose but not too much. Sometimes the paid is important too and you might end up doing something FUN and/or fullfilling but u don't get enough remuneration. Start making some products and putting them up for sale, or if you're skilled enough at it, do some minor work for friends and family. There's nothing wrong with career changes. vyroburn Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I feel your pain. I was working as an IT guy for a school district and I felt as though I wasn't challanged persay, so I switched Jobs. I took a role of a IT consulant which some would say is the same thing but I ended up hating it so much. I went back to education and well so far so good. suedenim Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Hobbies you love are usually a good bet for career changes as you already know you like the work, even better if you can take your existing knowledge along too. Not sure on your family commitments but advertise yourself in the local papers etc. as a weekend carpenter/handyman and see how it goes.
