GPU for friend's build

Recommended Posts

Putting together a build for my friend, and I've got him down for a 3570k and a Z77 chipset... but I haven't had time to really read reviews on the nVidia 6xx and ATI 7xxx cards to this point.

Basically budget is $150, would like the card to play most games at 1920x1080 (details don't have to be maxxed, but med-high would be nice). Also, the card has to support up to 3 monitors no gimmicks.

The 3 monitors immediately made me think of ATI, but it won't be gaming on all 3 monitors so eyefinity isn't totally necessary. But nVidia may have improved their offerings in multiple monitor support recently for all I know.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Looks like you have to go AMD on this one, nVidia's 670 and 680 can support 4 monitors, but both of those are well over your budget.

I would try to get a 7850 on sale somewhere, or second hand for that price, if not, get a 7770.

If the budget is a solid $150, look for a 6870, they're usually right at $150, and ~$120 on sale. You can also probably pick up a used 6950 or 560ti for that price. I haven't seen the 7850 anywhere below $220 yet, personally. Used, I've only seen them around $200.

the 3 monitor support rules out a 560Ti, thus i think a low-med AMD 7 series will do best here.

A used 6950 will also fit the bill nicely, but with more power draw and heat, but more performance than the others

LD - I'm assuming that the tri-monitor setup will be for work related tasks, while he will drop back to a single monitor for gaming?

Same question here.

The best I can think of is getting a 6950 2Gb card and try to flash it to a 6970. Maybe even two 7770's in crossfire?

The problem is those three monitors need quite a bit of Vram if you are going to game on them.

Exactly. And if using 3 monitors for gaming I don't think the $150 budget is going to cut it :)

Right you are Wevs. He's into Real Estate/Accounting crap. I don't know the ins and outs, but the extra screens are for browsers, excel spreadsheets, etc. Shouldn't be anything graphically intensive.

He doesn't play games a whole lot, but I'm gonna hook him up as best I can. Maybe I'll be able to convince him to do some BF3 with me...
