LuckyDeath Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Putting together a build for my friend, and I've got him down for a 3570k and a Z77 chipset... but I haven't had time to really read reviews on the nVidia 6xx and ATI 7xxx cards to this point. Basically budget is $150, would like the card to play most games at 1920x1080 (details don't have to be maxxed, but med-high would be nice). Also, the card has to support up to 3 monitors no gimmicks. The 3 monitors immediately made me think of ATI, but it won't be gaming on all 3 monitors so eyefinity isn't totally necessary. But nVidia may have improved their offerings in multiple monitor support recently for all I know. Suggestions? Thanks!
Muchoman1 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Looks like you have to go AMD on this one, nVidia's 670 and 680 can support 4 monitors, but both of those are well over your budget. I would try to get a 7850 on sale somewhere, or second hand for that price, if not, get a 7770.
MJCRO Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 A GTX 550Ti isn't out of the question. But I'll go with muchoman on this, a HD7770 or HD7850 are much better.
DarkScorpion Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) If the budget is a solid $150, look for a 6870, they're usually right at $150, and ~$120 on sale. You can also probably pick up a used 6950 or 560ti for that price. I haven't seen the 7850 anywhere below $220 yet, personally. Used, I've only seen them around $200. Muchoman1 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 the 3 monitor support rules out a 560Ti, thus i think a low-med AMD 7 series will do best here. A used 6950 will also fit the bill nicely, but with more power draw and heat, but more performance than the others
Shurman292 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 There's also the 6870. It fits the price range and supports Eyefinity, but the 1gb of vram puts me off a little.
LuckyDeath Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 OK, I'll be on the lookout for any deals on a 7850/6870... if I can't find either of those, the 6870 will be next on my list... then the 7770.
wevsspot Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 LD - I'm assuming that the tri-monitor setup will be for work related tasks, while he will drop back to a single monitor for gaming?
Tjj226_Angel Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 LD - I'm assuming that the tri-monitor setup will be for work related tasks, while he will drop back to a single monitor for gaming? Same question here. The best I can think of is getting a 6950 2Gb card and try to flash it to a 6970. Maybe even two 7770's in crossfire? The problem is those three monitors need quite a bit of Vram if you are going to game on them.
wevsspot Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Same question here. The problem is those three monitors need quite a bit of Vram if you are going to game on them. Exactly. And if using 3 monitors for gaming I don't think the $150 budget is going to cut it
LuckyDeath Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Right you are Wevs. He's into Real Estate/Accounting crap. I don't know the ins and outs, but the extra screens are for browsers, excel spreadsheets, etc. Shouldn't be anything graphically intensive. He doesn't play games a whole lot, but I'm gonna hook him up as best I can. Maybe I'll be able to convince him to do some BF3 with me... wevsspot Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Gotcha. Tri-monitors with a low > mid range AMD card that supports three monitors should suffice then.
