Stonerboy779 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The government wants to bring in some new security measures which would require aussie ISPs to store data on every origin and destination ip of consumers on there networks. Which would mean every time you assess say Facebook or google a little bit of info is stored saying your ip navigated to Facebook or google etc. This has other implications it means details of your every day doing is going to be stored so that means anything shady or less than savory is going to be stored which means even thougrourly cleaning out Internet history and logs ain't going to clear your porn history This info is also ment to be stored for two years and would take up petabytes of room and the potentional for it to be greatly misused is definately there. The whole thing has been written up on the hush hush and there is only a short 4 week period for people to lodge complaint. The supposed reason for the government wanting these new powers and all this data is to stop things like child pornography. Which while a great sentiment their way of doing things is bullshit. What are your opinions? What do you think of such endeavors by governments? To you Americans what would you say if your government tried to make two year records of every single part of your online history. bilcliff Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) *sigh* whats the jail sentance for assassinating a prime minister these days? its got to better than dealing with more stupid policy from this government. Haven't they got enough issues at the moment that they need to resolve without poking their noses into the interwebz oh crap thats going to be logged to my ip. The men in black suits will be busting my door down for plotting to assassinate the prime minister Edited July 13, 2012 by bilcliff
MJCRO Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) Pretty sad how a proxy and or mac changer makes a multi-million dollar law/bill like that USELESS. When will politicians wake up and realize laws like these are a waste of time and money. They should be putting their efforts into things that actually MATTER. /endrant Edited July 13, 2012 by MJCRO
xPETEZx Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The UK gov is also wanting some . like this. I don't really see how it can practically be done. If we forgo the many ways in which people will be able to bypass this, and assume they don't exist. The amount of data that would be created every second would be insane. Then there would need to be some kind of system to analyse all this data and make sense of it. Here in the UK they want to be able to prevent terror attacks with this stuff, but in order for them to make sense of the data quick enough the computing power would be incredible. Like you say, all in a time when there are so many other things they need to worry about...
Stonerboy779 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 It's amazing just how stupid governments can be :/ I feel a limitless sorry for the ISPs because it seems the government wants to force everything onto them. If you can be bothered reading this http://m.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/new-web-spy-powers-for-and-against-20120712-21y34.html You will see just how stupid the people advocating the new "Spy Powers" are. They failure to realize that encryption no matter how complex won't stop data this sensitive been a source of cyber attacks. They also do t realize the sheer volume or resources that would be taken up just to reliably store this data let alone make sense of if all. It's all just a stupid joke and I can't believe that there aren't enough people in the government that realize how impractical it is. Tjj226_Angel Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 You know, sometimes I feel like politicians come up with laws just to keep themselves from boredom. Pirating should be made legal. The only control a government should have over the internet should be for child porn and for murder/assault/rape. Every law that any politician has made involving the internet is broken everyday. It is so stupid. It is like your parents telling you when you were a kid not to eat the ice cream or the cookie in the jar. Just because they tell you not to...doesn't mean you aren't going to put an effort in. (minus heinous felonies and child porn I hope) I agree with MJCRO that laws are just a waste of money and resources.
Stonerboy779 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Pirating should not be made legal Tj Stealing is still stealing digitally or otherwise. Although I reckon some companies should really get a grip. I would like to see new release AAA game titles for $20, new release DVD for $10, blu ray $15, collector edn $20 etc. Why can't companies aim for volume over margin. I disagree with you on the first part because when I say legalize, it doesn't necessarily mean that I think it is correct. I am saying that our government shouldn't have anything to do with it mostly because it has been the biggest joke to watch them police pirating, companies are whiny little ***ches, and realistically pirating isn't even needed for the most part anymore. Think about it. Close to all of music on the market can be found on yourtube, most movies and shows can be streamed for free if you look around hard enough, and most software that the average person needs can be found for free as well. Eventually pirating will stop naturally altogether. more and more software tools are becoming available to download various forms of media that are totally free and legal which brings me to my end point. People are always going to try and get stuff for free. If one day you make pirating illegal, the next day people will figure out a way where it is legal and easier to do than pirating. The next day after than recording tools (you can record audio and video off of youtube with screen screen recording software) will be illegal. And then we will find a way around that law, and then a new law will be passed and so on and so on. No government can police that kind of a paradox. So rather than the government wasting untold amounts of money and resources trying to police it, I think the government should just tell companies to invest in better data encryption I do however agree with the second part. Companies should definitely focus on selling more product at lower prices than less copies at higher prices. I bought cowboys and aliens for 20 bucks on DVD. That was just a tad over what I would make for 2 hours of work and the movie was 1 hour and 30 minutes. There is definitely a slight discrepancy there.
