Mathiaslp Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Good evening! Currently I have CF 6870 1GB which i don't feel like does the job. My monitor is a Dell U2711. I don't play FPS games, but i wont denie I Will play it sooner or later. What GPU Should I go for with my resolution? The 7970 3GB? The GTX 680 4GB? Or the 680 2GB? Sure the 4GB version Would be Best, but I just don't feel like spending that much money, if one of the others does the job aswell. Cheers! El_Capitan Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Any of the above. I play games at 2560x1600 with two GTX 680 2GB's in SLI. They don't suffer unplayable performance at that resolution at the highest settings due to lack of VRAM.
Muchoman1 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Your best bet would be a GTX 670, the best models for air cooling are the ASUS Direct Cu, Gigabyte Windforce or Zotac AMP
Puck Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 What issues are you having??? I run the same resolution with dual 6870s and have no problems maxing out anything I've thrown at them. Crossfire loves CPU, what processor and ovwrclock are you running?

Mathiaslp Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 #2but the 670 only has 2GB VRam? #4The 7950 has 3GB ram, and so does the 7970, however the 7970 is around 70€ expensiver - are those 70€ worth anything? #1 SLI 680 sounds good, but i can't spend that much money. #3 Well I don't have problems with CF In my games atm, but they generate so much heat it's unbeliveable!! And i still know that Their not too great for that resolution.
Muchoman1 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 2GB vram is plenty for that resolution, or you can get a 4GB 670 from EVGA if you want more
Nyt Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 What AA levels do you usually use in games ? High AA such as 8xMSAA will chow into VRAM usage If you use 4xMSAA or below, 2Gb is enough If you use 8xMSAA, 3Gb or more Just remember Nvidia utilizes FXAA as well which doesnt not consume as much VRAM as MSAA whilst giving a very pleasing quality very similar to MSAA and thats why I'd choose a GTX680 2Gb because I doubt any single card would be able to manage 8xMSAA at 2560x1440 and be playable just because of performance and not VRAM
Mathiaslp Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 To be honest, I havnt played with MSAA yet. I just don't wanna buy myself a GPU that I can replace again in a year. That is why im unsure if it Should be the 680 with 2GB or the 7970 with 3GB. I've seen reviews with BF3 ón 1920*1080 with Ultra Preset and MSAA x8 eating up to 1.8GB vRAM. Thats why im confused if the 680 with 2GB is better than the 7970 with 3GB?
El_Capitan Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 You shouldn't need any higher than MSAA x4 at 1920 x 1200, much less any resolution higher than that. The only reason to would be to stress test the graphics cards, but visually, you really won't notice the difference.
Mathiaslp Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 So a GTX 680 2GB Will be fine for my 2560x1440 in any game?
Nyt Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 So a GTX 680 2GB Will be fine for my 2560x1440 in any game? At 4xMSAA or FXAA, yes.
