why are PCI-e x1 Audio Cards so Expensive ?

That's what I was getting at. PCI cards are generally less expensive because the interface is dying. Other than Asus you don't find a lot of decent PCI sound cards. If you want to get good design and engineering + latest technology you're almost stuck with PCIe and the higher cost.

There are some relatively affordable PCIe sound cards though. Like this ASUS one, for example. Little bit more money than the PCI version, but still won't break the bank.

Agreed, that card is a great value. My only issue with lower cost sound cards is that in some cases you might be better off just using the onboard sound (depending on what the onboard solution is). Many of today's motherboards have surprisingly good onboard sound.
