Prometheus (SPOILERS) - Plot Discussion

Recommended Posts

BACK OUT NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE

This topic WILL spoil the movie for you if you have not seen it. For the first post I use (spoiler) tags just in case someone clicks on this topic thinking the spoiler tag in the title was for grins. Though you are on your own after this. The warning has been made.

This topic is for people who have seen the movie and would like to discuss the intentional questions Ridley Scott left unanswered.

Opening Scene

I think the intention of the opening scene is to get us to believe this is how the Engineers created human life, but can we really assume this is Earth for the Waterfall scene? Why would humans evolve but the engineers do not if we are from the same DNA? Also if the DNA was indeed a match, wouldn't we have to be far more similar than depicted in the movie?

LV-223 vs LV-426

This movie takes place on LV-223 while the first movie takes place on LV-426. The Engineer on 426 was much larger ...which could hint towards evolution, or just simple plot hole. In Prometheus David aluded to there being more ships on LV-223 so it is quite possible some other Engineers were awakened and flew to LV-426 ...or perhaps it was before they went into cryostasis.

Black Ooze

So we see it used a few different ways and all were different.

  1.
  2. We see it completely destroy an engineer and reform his DNA
  3. We see it radically change some worms to freaky white cobra snakes
  4. We see it ooze out on its own from the vases ...which leads one to wonder what is the point of the vase
  5. We see it create life in Dr. Shaw - which by the way was the only female that interacted with it
  6. We see it create abnormal mutations when applied in a small dose

David

What is his purpose? Androids are designed to not hurt humans yet David clearly violates this. Though he clearly baits the archeologist by asking how far he would go to prove his theory before he dips his finger into the glass. He waits for "approval" before following through on the order given to him. When David tells Vickers the order he got was "try harder" it is almost as if they knew what the black ooze could do despite the limited testing he did on moon. Seems rather careless if the entire goal was to get the Engineers to help extend Weyland's life. David's actions do not seem to match up with the real mission goal. Also, what is the motive in helping Dr. Shaw at the end - self preservation?

Dr. Shaw's Spawn

Anyone else wonder if this is the early form of the Queen we see in Aliens?

Dr. Shaw

Is she going to LV-426 or do you think that is too simple and she is going elsewhere?

The Engineers

Early in the movie it is stated we make androids because we can, it is as simple as that. But if the intro of the movie truly is the birth of humans per the Aliens universe then it seems to have a bit more forethought than that. Why send 1 guy millions of light years away to sacrifice himself to create a new species? According to ancient cave drawings they had to have visited again to send this invitation. When humans create androids there is benefit from it, immediate benefit too. What would the Engineers gain from randomly creating life?

Not to mention it appears they have no control afterwards ...as well as the desire to destroy us on site once they see us. When the humans first discover the ruins they see a projection of an Engineer running but they do not show from what or even give clues. The restless horrible inhabitants we see in the rest of the movie is a result of the Prometheus intervention. If you removed the crew's interaction of the planet, does that mean Aliens would have never been born? If so, what took out the Engineers?

Seeing as how interaction with the Black Ooze had different results every time, it almost seems we can draw a conclusion the face hugging inpreganating aliens wouldn't have been born without Dr. Shaw. If that is true then we can assume the crashed ship on LV-426 is after the events of Prometheus.

gentelman my quarrel is with the ladies and ladies alone

very simple resource management means used might be fancier

why prometheus simple

chicken and egg argument is between ridley scotts ego and the studios

on ridleys account we can easily say that it was his first big picture, international succes stepping stone (john hurt being the hottest actor in the cast during the shoot)

and his longing for earlier faster tastier days of life as well as his need to be young again but in a more refined way(his anectodes regarding alien start and end with bio mechanoid awfully lot) please dont forget we started valuing things that amuse us(after there was nothing new to build but a lot of new things to fight over namely the 60s and ofcourse after we understood that the third one would be (something that I would want but I dont think many others are in accordance with my sentiments) a bit of a downer for everbody or whats left of everybody

he is not the only one 1977 and on we had many genre generation defining cultural events which we have tried to emulate in the new millenia (wars were seem to be declining considering that sticks have gottn awfully big)

hence a new means of pacification the best kind :) you kill people on screen yet they dont die in real life the gorier more unimaginable the better (by the way lets extrapolate on this by adding population=

on studios side whatever their surveys say or in some cases like dimension studios of the nineties how well they connect with their core audiance (considering that they provided excellent diversions)

the thing that I did not like in the movie the engineers demise

Not everybody is supposed to root for the female considering that they are out to get the male of the species

and I love a woman who has to carry her purse on her person all the time all the more reason to make more examples of it after all it makes an easier target for the generations to come

I heard that this movie was terrible and pretty much didn't offer up anything all that spectacular other than some neat 3D visuals...

To answer your first question

Your forgetting that evolution could still play a part in the whole equation. Animals adapt to their surroundings, the engineers could of been from a far different environment. Also their DNA wasn't an exact match if you watched the comparison there were some differences, but it was close enough to show that they share a commonality with us.

Nice. I was hoping for a thread like this.

Glad someone else is interested in discussing this. So when you going to get to discussing? :P

If you like Alien / Aliens then you should like this movie. If you're not a fan of the Alien universe then I could see how one would be disappointed ...mostly because it doesn't end like most movies do. It gives fans an answer to their biggest question and then raises many more.

As far as the movie itself, it is an action thrill ride. It's not sci-fi horror like Alien was nor is it straight action like Aliens was, it is in between. It keeps you guessing who is on what side, what their motive is and how do their actions affect the Alien universe. It has some truly off the wall scenes that will make you cringe. Fassbender was awesome and Charlize Theron always rocks the place ...and she looks good in the skin tight clothing as well. I think Noomi Rapace did a much better job in this movie than she did in Girl With a Dragon Tattoo.

Haven't seen the movie and don't really plan to either so i also didn't bother reading the spoilers lol

So why post, did the trolls take the day off? :fp:

I was unsure how to interprete that DNA Reader so you could be right with that. The only possible sign of evolution I see with the Engineers is the size difference between Prometheus and the original Alien movie. Outside of that, the three engineers you see in Prometheus look the same ...and one of them was at the very least thousands of years prior.

For the people who've seen it, is it worth watching?

See my response that I gave to Andrew. :P

In short, I think so... but mostly if you're a fan of the Alien and Aliens movies.

Wow did you type your first reply from your phone while waiting for the movie to start ...because those messages were 2hrs apart and that is how long the movie was.

Ridley Scott said he wants to do 2 more movies if Prometheus is successful. By the time the 3rd movie comes out we would be able to fill in all the pieces of how it ties into the original Alien movie. Though if Prometheus wasn't successful he wanted the movie to stand on its own. Not sure I would agree with him that it stands on its own since it leaves so many unanswered questions. Good movie but definitely needs the sequels.

So my thoughts are:

  •
  • She left Earth and went to LV-223 to find out human origins
  • In the process she is responsible for the origins of the Xenomorphs we see in the Alien universe
  • I think the early xenomorph she helped birth stowed away on the ship and both will land on LV-426 (where Alien takes place) and that early xenomorph will eventually turn into the Queen

Just guesses on the last two by the way.

I just got back from seeing it. I thought it was horrible to be honest. I don't know what I was expecting...but a CGI effects show wasn't it. As many questions as it attempted to answer it started hundreds more.

I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money.
