Been thinking its about time to upgrade to a new ivy bridge rig and im looking for suggestions on what to get. I will use it for mostly gaming and overclocking I will try to reuse my: ATI Radeon HD 5870 Corsair TX750 Both HD's Antec 902 Case Things I need to buy: Motherboard RAM Processor Heatsync Ive been looking at these: RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb (2x4GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233184 CPU: Intel i5-3550 Ivy Bridge 3.5Ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116505 MoBo: AsRock Z77 Extreme4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293 Heatsync: What are the good heatsyncs these days anyways? Ive been out of OCing for like 3 years so im not even sure what I should be paying anymore. Ill see if any of my roomates want it but my guess is they wont, so yeah I think ill be planning on selling it when i upgrade. Ok so back to your build (from the bottom up) Heatsink fan: since you will not be doing much OCing Honestly the Stock HSF should be enough but if you do plan to OC a little i would recommend a fan favorite The Hyper 212+ it works great . Is there a huge attachment to this AsRock board because I have had about a 40% success rate with AsRock with virtually no support.this is also a good board that is long lasting and a have a friend that has had this board since it has come out (literally the day it hit shelves) Link Below.as for the processor you chose a processor with a locked multiplier but i see why you chose that (a free limited time offer shirt lol) but all in all a good processor.As for the ram corsair vengence is a really good brand im just not 100% i have seen those modules though (just me). Looks good. While there are many here who support AsRock I have seen a few here have bad luck with them. I personally wouldn't go MSI - they crowd their PCI lanes and use sub-par materials. In this price range (I'm guessing $150ish) I would probably go Gigabyte - such as this. If going ASUS I would probably spend a bit more, but their mid-tier should be good too. Now is a great time to buy a graphics card - just saying No real order, here are the most popular choices on this forum for cooling: Noctua NH-D14 - Top Tier Air PROS: quiet, gets the job done efficiently, best in class CONS: Ugly, very big (interferes with some RAM heatsinks, like the one you picked) [*]COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO - Best cheap air PROS: cheap, gets the job done well for modest OCs, light weight CONS: none - just won't do as good of a job cooling during load [*]CORSAIR H80 - 2nd Best Hybrid (Self-contained loop) PROS: small profile around CPU, looks nice, fan profile is easy to use, easy to install, same performance as D14 CONS: Expensive - almost same price as H100, louder than D-14, only supports two 120mm fans (may be pro for some) [*]CORSAIR H100 - Top Tier Hybrid (Self-contained water loop) PROS: small profile around CPU, looks nice, fan profile is easy to use, easy to install, better performance than the D14 CONS: Expensive - went up in price too, louder than D-14, not all cases support a dual 120mm fan rad There are a bunch of great air coolers on the market but those are probably the most popular and all I really feel like focusing on. Another great air cooler is the Silver Arrow. There are cheaper self-contained loops such as the Antec 620. The CM Hyper Master 212+ is typically $10 cheaper than the evo though I would spend the extra for EVO. The Noctua U12P and NZXT Havik are also worthy competitors to look at.
