New gpu, trying to outperform Crossfire

Recommended Posts

Looking into getting a new gpu, but I am only looking at getting a single card. I dont have the budget for a $300 + card so I am trying to find out if there are any Radeon cards that can outperform 5770's in crossfire (both x16, neither overclocked) for around $200. I was looking at the 6870's, mainly because with such a low price point I could get one now, then pick up another in a month or two, But i would rather not take the performance hit while I am waiting if the 6870 can't beat out the 5770's

this is the 6870 I am looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127545

I chose it because of the cooler mainly, from the reviews it looks to be pretty efficient at it's job, and I feel like I could also overclock it more than the basic coolers on the ASUS and Sapphire cards.

The reason I am trying to switch from crossfire initially is the heat coming from both of those 5770's is getting out of hand (both hitting around 70c when I'm gaming) and heating everything up, plus drawing a lot of energy to boot.

6970

he said he doesn't have the budget for a $300 + card

op, i would get crossfire 7770s

they run very cool, at around 60 degrees in crossfire, they outperform a 7950 (500 dollar card) and they can be picked up for around 150 each.

sapphire 7770 with a great cooler running at 1ghz stock. $149 with rebate and free shipping

even get one now and then get the second later if you cant afford both now. these draw less energy than the 5770s and have much much more performance

I definitely like the 7770's but now I have another question: I am Running an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe which only supports PCIE 2.0. Am I going to have any compatibility issues if I am trying to run a 3.0 card on a 2.0 board?

Board for reference:

no issues with running those cards on that board

Don't get a HD 7770, it doesn't even outperform a HD 6850.

At the least, get something equivalent to the GTX 570 or the HD 6950/6970. You can find those for under $300 used (like in the $240 - $260 range).

do you think that the performance issue will be solved over time with driver updates, or do you think it is already a lost cause?

It's not a performance issue at all it wasn't ment to beat the 6870.

It does however beat the 6770 by an easy 20% with lower temps and lower power consumption with much better overclocking.

Plus the price of it for what it does is great. It may not beat 6870cf but it will perform well and not too far off for a $150 or so saving possibly more CBF checking right now on us prices.

crossfired 7770 review. for $300 bucks you can have more performance than a 7950, which crushes a 570 or 6970. and this is un-overclocked too.

3dmark 11 extreme, 570 = 1857, 7770 cf = 2413.

so for $40 more than the used 570, you get higher performance, new cards, less power draw and less heat

Also, just FYI, the 6770 is a rebadged 5770. Pretty much exactly the same card but the 6770 supports Blu-Ray 3D.

Yeah, I read the review, but the OP is looking for a single card solution.
