They are called Dry counties. There are many of them around where I live.

Actually, Dry counties and what Indiana laws for Sunday mean are different boinker. You can still drink on Sunday, if you have the alcohol or beer already, go to a restaurant that serves alcohol, or a bar (which are open on Sundays). You just can't go to a grocery or convenient store (LQ stores are closed on Sun) and buy alcohol or beer. Dry counties as you know work differently than that. I have been on many vacations down to Dale Hollow Lake, which is on the Tenn/Ken boarder. Some counties down there are dry, some are not! Really sucks when you are on a huge lake on a boat, and you don't know where 1 county ends and another begins or which one is dry and which one isn't!

Last time I checked there was supposed to be a separation of church and state. Why do I, an agnostic, have to be subjected to not buying alcohol on a Sunday?

Because those are the laws Governed by the state legislator. Instead of attacking ones religion that has no longer anything to do with the reason the law is that way, why don't you petition the governor like a decent law abiding citizen.

Seems like they would get rid of those laws regardless if common sense came into play.

"Research has found that dry counties have higher proportions of alcohol-related traffic crashes than do wet counties. A study in Kentucky suggested that residents of dry counties have to drive farther from their homes to consume alcohol, thus increasing impaired driving exposure.[3] A study of Arkansas noted that wet and dry counties are often adjacent and that alcohol beverage sales outlets are often located immediately across county or even on state lines.[4] Other researchers have pointed to the same phenomenon. Winn and Giacopassi observed that residents of wet counties most likely have "shorter distances [to travel] between home and drinking establishments."[5] From their study, Schulte and colleagues concluded that in dry counties "individuals are driving farther under the influence of alcohol, thus increasing their exposure to crashes."

I will respect That individual for his reaserch but the fact of what is put there is not the responsability of the state or law its the person that is driving while intoxicated. Liquid courage They call it.

I think the point was that dry counties don't do anything to restrict drinking and in fact they tend to make things worse.

Never knew about dry counties until yesterday but I do know that there is no way in this day and age that they will have any beneficial effect on someone.

The only reason I see them still being in effect is a strongly conservative political leadership having a sway of power over the county. That or a very monitory minded power that be that keeps it purely so the can fine to all high he'll the citizens that attempt to go around the ruling.

A dry Sunday is beyond stupid imho because how many people here go out to someone for a drink and lunch or something from time to time.

Exactly. It isn't the responsibility of the state or law to make personal decisions for people. I want to be the one to decide if I drink beer. I want to be the one to decide if I smoke cigarettes. I want to decide if I smoke weed. I want to be the one to decide if I have guns in my home. I don't want the Gov't to decide for me.

This.

I can't buy alcohol on Sundays where I live and it sucks. Businesses hate it, consumers hate it, everyone hates it. It won't ever get overturned because the people who oppose it are FAR louder than anyone else and they happen to be the ones with the most money as well.

Maybe we should go to what Connecticut is doing and have things in law configured as if there is no victim there is no crime style. Maybe??

Personally I think that makes perfect sense.

If someone wants to do drugs and mess up their body...it's their freakin' body, let them do whatever they want. It shouldn't be a crime until they put someone else in danger or damage property.

Also - since this is the official thread for side topics from the other thread - do people really believe that homosexuality is a choice? How does that even begin to make sense to someone? :dunno:
