You obviously don't live in northern Canada :P

For $40,000, you can't afford an high end luxury German car since most of their base models range from $30,000 to $60,000+.

Also everything is an option when considering those cars.

I'd probably just recommend a Subaru Imperza. Great car, decently reliable motor and good gas mileage. The STI model is probably your way to go in the case that you live in northern Canada and get a lot more snow then most in the states.

Canada isn't the only place that snows lol. Besides i'm a truck/Jeep guy. If I can't get through in 2wheel drive no way in hell is your car going to whether front or rear wheel drive =P

It might not be the only place it snows, but here today it was -45C with the wind chill (-30C without), and we've gotten days with more than a couple inches of snow falling in a few hours

Unless you live in Siberia, Greenland, or possibly Alaska it doesn't get much worse :P

Depends on how much weight you have in the back of the SUV/Truck and the tires on the car or truck.

In snow/ice with good tires and overlooking ground clearance it isn't going to matter whether you're in an 2wd truck (unweighted) or a FWD/RWD car.

In fact as I said overlooking ground clearance from my experiences FWD is excellent in snow, now add in corners and of course the FWD will do horribly.

Yes, but a RWD would do no better. Over-steer, under-steer. They are both horrible :P

At least in straight stretches though a FWD is easier to keep straight.

My two favorite suggestions so far are the VW and the Subaru. I can get either a VW Passat Highline TDI w/ Nav or a Subaru Impreza WRX for $41K after tax, freight, etc. Hopefully I can get the price down substatially iif I offer to pay it all in cash (maybe $4-5K). Anyways, thanks for the suggestions guys :D
