New GPU

Sorry guys about making another thread about upgrading my GPU, but to me the GPU is the most important purchase for a system. The old thread is here

In that thread I wanted to get the 5970, but I looked into it more and read some reviews and it doesn't seem like the best choice anymore. So I am not considering it anymore.

I am thinking about getting another 6850 for X-fire, because I can then I have all 4 of my monitors hooked up to cards and not onboard. I know X-fire can be a hassle but I know which games to enable/disable it for so that is not really an issue. I have heard that X-fire 6850 is near 580 GTX performance in some games which is a big plus, also it is currently the cheapest upgrade for me right now. 6850's go cheap on ebay.

I am considering the 6970, but I don't know how much better it is then a 6850 for the price, but I think getting another 6850 for now and waiting for the 7950 or 6970 to come down in price is a better idea.

So Should I get a 6850 for X-fire or a 6970 or wait for 7950? My budget for a GPU is max $350(that's why I would wait on the 7950 to come down in price)

When it comes down to AMD graphics cards, always go for the most powerful card. Crossfire still doesn't scale very well, especially with the last couple round of drivers. When the 6000 line was introduced, those drivers had very good scaling, but not these days. When both the GTX 570's and HD 6970's are overclocked and put in SLI/Xfire, the HD 6970's used to beat them, but not anymore.

Head towards Nvidia, where putting GTX 560 on up in SLI gives you the better price per performance than AMD.

Well I am still not sure what I am going to do, dual 6850s or 1 6970, but I am not going to nvidia because AMD chipsets play nicer with AMD GPUs and I have an X-fire board.(but on my next intel build nvidia will be considered )

Also I still might buy your 6970.

I disagree, SLI hacks have gotten easier to implement and better (no longer have to use a specific Nvidia driver), and 990FX boards are now compatible for SLI.

If you can find someone that wants an EK Acetal full cover block for the HD 6970 I can sell you the card... or are you going watercooling?

I like the price without the block better($260). ;) So you don't want to sell it without the block? There is always ebay.

It's just a hassle. If it doesn't sell, it's just one expensive paperweight, and I don't sell on evilbay.

Sorry guys, I just have few questions.

1.Do I need more then 1GB at 1920x1080? [/Quote] no

2.Can I run 2 monitors off a 6850 and the other 2 off a 6950? (no crossfire)

yes 6 actually 3 per card

3.Is this a good card? (close enough to a 6970?)

Its a fine card but its not a 6970
