NikoDG Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 This is probably a dumb question, but I just wanna be like 9999999% sure cause a bad PSU can fry your system. Can a single 1500 PSU put out enough power to supply a 3960X, dual 6990's, 4x 2.5" HDD's, a 2.5" SSD, a Swiftech MCP655, a slew of fans, and peripherals (like keyboard, mouse, Blu-ray writer) and still have some extra power available to get a decent overclock on the CPU, memory, and maybe GPU's (I've never tried overclocking GPU's so I'm a little skittish on that one). t0asty Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 You could probably use less than 1000w... Only reason you would ever need many watts is if you had some crazy WC setup, 4 580's, etc...
NikoDG Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Oh really? I used a power calculator and it said I needed 1300W, lol -.- I'm hoping to cram a 420x140mm radiator, a 280x140mm radiator, and two 140x140mm radiators, though I still have some research to do. Tjj226_Angel Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Yeah, 1500 would be like an SR3 mother board, quad SLI ASUS Mars 2, 3 raptor drives, a massive water cooling setup, and enough LEDs to light up the bottom of the ocean. NikoDG Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Lol, alright xD I'll probably just grab a 1200W or so then (give me a little extra power for future upgrades, and compensate for the aging of the PSU).

d6bmg Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 1000W will be enough for you. Grab Corsair AX1200 unit to maintain peace of mind.
Black64 Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 To be safe, yes that will work.
NikoDG Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Another question, though kinda off-topic, do 2.5" hard drives (HDD/SSD) need a fan blowing over them to keep them cool?
Black64 Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Another question, though kinda off-topic, do 2.5" hard drives (HDD/SSD) need a fan blowing over them to keep them cool? no, they don't make that much heat.
NikoDG Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Yeah, I didn't think so, I found this nifty Lian-Li adapter that converts a single 5.25" bay to a quad 2.5" case, but it has no fan. Seems like my best space saving option.
