PremiumAcc Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 (edited) I am looking to build a new rig and cannot decide between these two video cards: MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC and MSI Radeon HD 6950 R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC. (I am leaning more towards the 6950). Which one do you think is better and why? I look forward to people's replies. VaporX Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 This is a tough call, the good news is either will get the job done. If you are a folder or use a lot of GPU enhanced photo or video editing apps then nVidia wins due to CUDA support. This also gets you a better implementation of 3D and PhysX. If you want to do multiple monitors then AMD wins hands down. For pure gaming the AMD card wins benchmarks but the nVidia card has much better game support through drivers. How close is the price? If one is more than say $20 less than the other then I would go with the less expensive one if none of the above specific conditions apply. If the price is about equal then I will have to jump ship for right now and suggest the GTX560ti as it has MUCH better driver support in games. Alexandre Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) The 560ti was designed to compete with the 6870 not the 6950. This means that by getting a 6950 you will have slightly higher overall performance compared to the 560ti - not by a huge amount mind you but still by a small margin. Check out OCC's review of the ASUS 560ti for more info. What prices are you looking at for each card? I have to disagree, I have seen far fewer zero day issues from nVidia based cards than AMD in the last year or so. At the end of the day nVidia is just being a lot more aggressive when it comes to driver / gamer deve relations and it shows with the game releases. I guess you've probably seen more games in the past year than I. I haven't had any issues with AMD drivers recently except with Skyrim, and that's because I have 4 GPUs. Prunes Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 One of 6950's biggest advantages is the 2GB of RAM, which, as mentioned above, makes it possible to use more monitors. However, the GTX 560 Ti wins in some other programs such as editing. Like Ed said, the difference in game is very small at resolutions up 1920x1080, so go for the cheaper one. It was better to get the 6950 when it was possible to flash it, but since that's not really possible anymore unless you find a reference card. And that appears to be harder than it seems. In my opinion, you should get the GTX 560 Ti 448, if you're willing to spend a little more and can wait a little bit. It outperforms a GTX 570 in some of the games at a lower cost. The NVIDIA chipset is about $15 cheaper. Although I would like to buy the 3.0 PCI-E cards, the Radeon 7xxx series is out of my price range at the moment.
