PSU's Overheat protection. What does it do exactly?

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming you didn't run Furmark/Kombuster with the power uncapped (and I wouldn't recommend it with your card having issues).

Since a fan over the card helps keep it from crashing I'd guess the VRMs are gettings "okay" cooling but not enough under load without the fan. This could be due to poor airflow in general or bad pads on the VRM heatsink. Either way, it'll be good to replace those pads. :)

Let us know how they work when they come in. I just use regular scissors to cut it.

Thank you for the feedback. I already got an email for them saying that they shipped my order already (which I put this morning btw O.O) so I should be getting them by tuesday/wendsday.

  • 2 weeks later...

FrozenCPU is crazy good at both customer service and getting stuff shipped out ASAP. :)

Hey, got an update. My package came in today but I wasn't able to go to the courier, so, I'll get it tomorrow. The update that I have is that the computer did something that It has never done before, I was using it like I normally do with the MASSIVE underclock and while playing skyrim, the monitor went white like it normally does but then showed me a lot of little squares of different colors (attachment). Any ideas if it's still a heat issue?.

Thanks!

Looks to me like its seriously overheating or maybe update your video card drivers and or lower your vc settings when trying to play Skyrim. What vc do you have again....? Btw just because those pads were hard only means there is A LOT of heat present but that's it.

My card is This particular HD 4870. My drivers are up to date and changing them does not change the problem in the slightest. One question thought, Can this be the memory chips on the card overheating?, after all this model comes with them naked.

Is it overclocked in the slightest or have you uped the voltage at all. If not then to answer your question.... I really doubt it. How long have you had the card. I think you mentioned the fact that you couldn't rma it....

That is true, I can't RMA it. I've had the card for about 2 years now. I don't have it OCd at all, in fact it's Underclocked, like 120 mhz on the core and 100mhz on the memory, at least with this underclock it lets me play MOST of my games.

EDIT: Btw, if it was a heat issue, wouldn't Fur Mark make the error appear?, I've let it run for a while and it doesn't do anything, it even got to 98° and it was still working. On another note, the games that I play doesn't really make my card get THAT hot. I'm running out of options here -_-".
