d3athsd00r Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Looking to buy a new Nvidia GPU and I've been out of the game for quite a while. Its most likely going to be my christmas present so $150 is probably my max that can be spent. I'm pretty much only upgrading my 9800GTX+ b/c I have to run Battlefield 3 at 1280x720 at Medium to get about 35fps. So I was looking at a GTX 460... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130571 or a recertified 470... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130616 Also, GTX 500 series are currently out of the question because I'm running a Hackintosh with Kakewalk and the hardware is kinda limited atm. http://www.kakewalk.se/compatibility/ There's the link to the compatibility page. I was contemplating going Radeon but I like PhysX and EVGA Precision. And unless I can use my current 9800GTX+ as a PhysX card alongside the Radeon I want to stick with Nvidia and EVGA. Any suggestions or links would be much appreciated. Thanks all.
El_Capitan Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 What video card do you have, and what's your monitor's max resolution?
90sgamer Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I haven't tried it in a while, but at one time, I was able to get the my 9800GTX to work as a Physx card along side my Radeon HD 5870 on a Windows 7 machine. The catch was that I had to plug a monitor into the 9800GTX to get it to work. I only had one monitor, so I hooked up the Radeon via DVI and the 9800GTX via VGA. This led to my computer thinking I had two monitors. It worked well most of the time, but I kept losing my mouse cursor over on the fake extended monitor, and when my monitor would wake up from sleep, I would always be set to VGA and the extended screen. I'm sure there are ways to avoid these problems, but I didn't research it at the time. Basically, I got tired to constantly switching between display modes, and took out the 9800GTX. I think newer Nvidia drivers stop this setup now anyways, but I could be wrong. As far as a new GPU goes, I tend to not get recertified hardware, even from newegg, but I may just be paranoid. I would be afraid someone did some heavy OC'ing with it before hand, and might have broke something Even though newegg is supposed to check for 100% working order, I wouldn't do it. The 460 should be enough for BF3 unless you plan on doing a lot of AA or have a huge resolution (or multi-monitor setup). MJCRO Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I'd say the GTX 460, best price to performance ratio out there. Don't even bother with a re-certified or 500's series card now because their so much.

d3athsd00r Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I've got another question. What can I do with my old 512MB 9800GTX+ after upgrading? The best I could probably do with selling it is about $50. Would it be possible to utilize it some how along with the 460? El_Capitan Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Use it as a dedicated PhysX card. You might like it if you ever play something like Batman: Arkham City.
