I'm planing on starting a video game production company, and I wanted to do a little market research. I figured smart phones would be a relatively easy market to tap into, and I feel like there is a lack of games on the market that appeal to hardcore/advanced gamers on the go. But I cant just base it on my own opinion, I need to do some market research. That's where you guys come in. I would like to get your opinions on the matter. Please feel free to leave comments.

I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 and an iPod Touch first gen running iOS 3.1.3 and dual booting gingerbread. The games are ok, but nothing special. I play the puzzle ones the most since they get me thinking and make time go by pretty well. The shooter ones are the worst, the gameplay is terrible.

I own an iPhone and iPad and play games all the time. I play puzzlers, platforrmers, TDs, cannon/slingshots, runners, and slicers. I prefer games that have achievements (OpenFeint and/or GameCenter) and most importantly, I never pay a dime - I get all my games for free, either because they're always free or they go free for a few days, which I monitor through AppShopper.

I'm planing on offering 2 styles of the same game. A free version which has adds on the menu and home screens, and a paid premium version for $.99 to $1.99 for those who prefer an uninterrupted gaming experience

Not a bad system, but you have to make sure that the premium version is truly ad-free. People get extremely pissed if they pay for a game and ads are still there, even if they're less intrusive. The other option you may want to look into is In-App purchases. Don't know if it's available on the other OSs, but ever since iOS added IAPs, they really have changed the way games are presented, much like micro-transactions in F2P PC games. Offering up full content for free, but having IAPs for powerups or what-have-you seems to be the popular model right now.

I had an iPhone 4 for a couple months before I got rid of it. For the most part, I had no problem paying for games, and I most of all preferred physics based games (Tiny Wings, Angry Birds, Stupid Zombies). I voted dissatisfied on the immersion, but my idea of immersion is something on the level of Half-Life 2. The games I listed, I just played them while on the toilet or waiting around.

If you're going to do this than be prepared to sink a lot of time and money into this. If you're going to get a team it will be more money, but less time. With a game that's geared towards the "hardcore" crowd I wouldn't be surprised if the development time was between 6 months to a year, and that's if everything goes according to plan. I could offer some advice of what to do and what not to do.

looks like I was the only moron here to buy a windows fone which is a good thing since its junk in everyway to my android fone

Windows phone 7 or older, and the current phones out right now are really lax on the hardware; as far as I know, every single windows phone has a single core, but there are plans to build better phones in the future.

I have an andriod based system. LG Revolution. I do play games on it, but only when I'm bored at work, or waiting around for/on something or someone. Other than that, I mostly use useful apps only. I got a gaming PC/console for games.
