Why 775?

A sandy bridge dual-core performs at about the same level as the Q6600. An i3-2100 will stomp on a Q6600 at stock settings, and you don't have to pay much more to get a better CPU with overclocking capabilities. Not to mention the fact that you're going to be buying a new CPU for about the same price you'd put into an old one.

And DDR3 is wayyyy cheaper than DDR2 by this point in time.

I'm assuming they already have the entire system and just want an upgrade.

I have a 775 platform. If it wasn't so expensive to upgrade to an i7 platform I would do it. I just want something under $100 that will give me better multi tasking performance.

A 4.5 GHz e8400 is gonna be hard to beat. :P

Good luck finding a Q6600 for $100

for 152 after a $10 rebate

you could get an sandy bridge dual core setup to go in your current case.

CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 $10.00 Mail-in Rebate Card $49.99 = 39.99

GIGABYTE GA-H61M-DS2 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $54.99

Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge 2.4GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80623G530 56.99

Or for my mone I would subby in this chip Intel Core i3-2105 - 134.99

for a total of $229.97 after rebate

The G530 is only slightly better than his current chip at default settings, though. He'd probably want to at least get a core i3 2100 or better, and maybe even go for one of the K series processors if he wants to get more than default performance.

There are a couple i3-2100/MSI H61M-P23-B3 combos over on [H] for 130-135.00 shipped, faster than a 775 Quad for gaming probably and DDR3 is cheap enough, offset by what you could get out of your other parts now is the best time because the value of those parts isn't going up, I'd be interested in the GA-EP45-UD3P possibly
