Corsair AX 750W vs Antex High Current Pro 850W

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I'm building a new comp and narrowed my PSU choice down to antec and corsair

Corsair AX 750W $215

Antex High Current Pro 850W $209

(mwave prices)

Does anyone know what it is about the Corsair that might be better than the Antec? It's 100W less but almost the same price, I doubt I'll be using 850W anytime soon but still would the corsair have the beter performance?

Antec and Corsair both produce phenomenal PSU's. If you don't need the extra 100W, look at the features (such as if they are modular, what connections are available, how loud the fan is, etc) besides the wattage that will help you make your choice. :) Again, when it comes to these brands at this price range, you don't need to worry about which one will give you quality. They'll both give you what you need.

Thanks TN, that was helpful as the corsair is 100% modular.

Capitan, unfortunately newegg does not ship outside the US and I'm in Australia but cheers for the tip.

That sucks. There's a couple Aussie members here, I'm sure they know of a few sites that might sell at better prices (not dissing Mwave, as I shop there on occasion myself).

I have used PC Power and Cooling for years. Dating back to my AMD days and using touchy DFI lan party boards. This Corsair AX1200 was my first venture away from them in over 7 yerars and I will say I could not be happier with the piower supply. So take that for what it is worth. It is my understanding PC power and cooling is not 100% the quality it oncce was but I used to consider them the Gold standard in power supplioes and used to pay for th ename because I have never had one fail on me.

Mate where on earth are you buying?

I know our prices suck but you should check out pccasegear.com

My recommendation would go out for this silverstone strider plus 750watt, it's fully modular will support crossfire or sli and has an 80+ silver rating with single 12v rail design.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_535&products_id=15350

Price $145AUD

Actually just noticed they are both gold rated PSUs

I wouldnt touch the antecedent simply due to design resulting in 4x 12v rails

The corsair to me is not worth $70 more than a silver rated silverstone i am recommending and that I am currently running myself in a sli 560 rig.

Nice site stonerboy, I'll have a look at them, plus I just found the Modding and Computer stores list http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=78708 my bad for missing that but I was just using mwave as a point of comparison between the PSUs.

One good thing about Mwave is that you receive your order the next day if you order before the afternoon. Just got my Phantom case

Fair enough i am down in melb and can drive to these guys and can avoid any and all shipping costs. Although they offer reasonable shipping aus wide and have very nice prices.

Mwave i have found has slightly higher prices but as you said excellent shipping which i don't need

The strider which i am still recommending is $145 plus shipping

Standard Shipping (averages 2-5 days) $12

Express Shipping (averages 1-2 days) $12

So no reason not to get it with express shipping for $157 which is considerably less than the $175 before shipping from Mwave and it's also out of stock there.

Your power supply choices are both excellent but...

If you think it's "green" or you are someone who leaves their PC folding heavily 24/7 then efficiency matters and a 80 Plus Gold rated power supply may be a wise choice but if not then.....

Just as an example take two computers that pull 400W DC from the power supply, not too difficult if you game constantly on powerful graphics cards, but how many hours a day do you game?

I'll take four hours a day for this example and use two Corsair power supplies, the Bronze rated TX850M and the Gold rated AX850 based on typical costs in the USA.

The Corsair TX850M costs $149.99 and the Corsair AX850 costs $189.99, so $40.00 more, is it worth it? If you pull 400W from the power supplies for four hours a day, 365 days a year, it'll take approximately 9 years to pull that $40.00 back! (Based on $0.12/kWh). Is it worth it when both power supplies will give, in my opinion, equal service. It's something to think about?

Fully modular, what's all that about! I don't care what anyone says, fully modular is a gimmick. Show me a PC that requires 850W that doesn't need the 24 pin motherboard connector, a 4/8 pin ATX12V/EPS12V connector, two SATA connectors and at least two 6/8 pin PCI-E connectors (if it doesn't then why buy a 850W power supply).

The moral of the story? Buy a Corsair TX850M and save some money.

One thing I always look at is the 12v rail.. I always go for the ones with a single rail. I'm sure they have gotten better but it used to be if you didnt load all the rails fairly equially the psu wouldnt operate correctly or would burn out quicker. With a single rail you dont have to worry about it :).

As far as modular.. I like them because I dont use all the cables.. when doing cable management it's makes it easier if you can disconnect both ends. On some cases where you have to pop the psu out to get at other conponents it's nice to disconnect them at the psu rather then try to fish them out or have the psu haning there.. but other then some convience it's not necessary, more of a preference thing. Oh, and I do fold so 80+ is important to me :)
