Help Please, First build

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I am totaly new to building and overclocking. I had a friend build me a system and i am unhappy with it , and now attempting to build my own. I have been researching as much as i can, but my knowledge is limited. I have been looking at processors and picking between the AMD Phenom II 955be(wich i have) in current system, The Intel i-7 990x, and the i-7 2700k which i think i will go with because of the sandybridge and paring it with a Gigabyte mobo the GA-Z68X-UD7-B3. I could realy use comments on wether or not i am making the best decision and if not why, I realy need all the info i can get, Thank You.

Thought i would add a little more info, My Wife doesn't want me to upgrade my current system , she is claiming it. So I get to build myself a complete new system from the ground up with a $ 3,500 budget ( would like to stay aroung 2.5k if possible) hince the i7-2700k choice.

$2,500 to $3,500 will build you a MONSTER of a system. What games do you play? What do you run on it (to justify the cost of the 2600K over the 2500K)?

Do you have a monitor already? If so, what resolution is it?

Can't go wrong with the UD7. She's a beauty and can easily hold my 2600K @ 5Ghz with relatively low voltage compared to other motherboard's I've tried. I'd say go with 2700K if you got the money, but you save like $100 by just getting the 2600K since basically their the same chip. If your just looking to build a system that will last you a while for gaming or whatever, those two together won't disappoint you. smile.gif

First off, with that budget you want to post under the System build thread. You will get a lot more support there.

Because you have such a high price point, I would say that the i7 2600K paired with a ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131791 ) board will suit you nicely.

I like asus, but MSI is also another great company. The thing that is important to note in the motherboard I suggested is that it has 2 gen 3 pci ports, and supports intel ivy bridge.

I don't want to give you a part list since you are just asking about the processor and motherboard. However, if you would like a part list with suggestions and comments you really need to post on the system build section.

Your missing a lot of points. While the UD7 is a great board, it does not support PCI 3.0. The reason I suggested the Asus board is because you have great overclocking potential AND you have two pcie 3.0 ports for video cards. See this isn't a good time to start building a system any ways. Thats why my response was a little off. You need to understand Ivy bridge processors and the new AMD 7000 series graphics cards along with the Nvidia 600 series are comming out not long after are going to be out on the market in about 4 months.

Now that I think about it.....don't go with the i7 2600K at all. I forgot that Sandy Bridge E is coming out in 2-3 weeks. If you don't already know, sandy bridge e is the extreme series of the processor. I am sure you know that the 990X has an X at the end of it. That is what is now coming out except it is for sandy bridge. The specs are sort of similar to the 990X with the same price of 1K for the processor, but the difference is it turbos to 3.9GHz, has more overclocking head room and has more cache memory. Not to mention there are some cool features about the new chipset such as pci 3.0 compatibility. You are looking at a 1.4K mobo processor combo with the ability to play both of your video cards at full 16x by 16x rather than 8x and 8x. Then when the new video cards are out in 4 months or so, spend about 500 bucks on the tops of the line card or 500 but for two lower end cards. 200 bucks on ram, 300 on power supply, 200 on the case, XXX amount for a pci e SSD maybe???, 300 on water cooling loop, and 100 for extra little things. Don't spend money on a OS  .

That will be at your 3.5K mark and it would be wayyyy faster than your current wish list setup. In my mind the best combo for your budget should be out nov 14-27th, so please wait before you start buying parts to at least see what intel has in store for us.

I apologize if I haven't made much sense here, I am very tired and I probably should go to bed, but I am too addicted to computers to go to bed. So again my apologies if you can't understand this and feel free to post any questions you have.
