NuComer Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 (edited) Hey guys, My s775 mobo died last week and I had to get a micro-atx until I build something else. The worst part is that I had to stop using my hd4870, but yesterday a friend of mine was throwing out his 8800gt which is a pretty good single slot solution for me until I build something next year. The problem is that the card is artifacting on the windows 7 login screen and giving me a constant BSOD (0x00000116), but I can boot on safe mode. He told me that b4 giving up he tried to clean the card and re-apply the compound. I got a little scared cause I know he isn't too good with technical stuff, he's worse than me...and that's something -_-". So I open the card and my fears were correct, this is the most disgusting GPU I've seen in a while. I took this picture after I cleaned it the best I could and re-apply it myself, those red transparencies are to show you where the compound was, the green transparent line I put it there cause I want to ask what is the best way to clean it without damaging the PCB or its components. TBH I took the card just to try the oven fix, cause I know that it is a viable option, but after I saw the cards insides I think it could use new thermal pads and a better cleaning, so my questions, TL;DR Can someone tell some thermal pads that I can get on amazon?. What's the best way to clean the green transparency area of the card if it was filled with ceramique-like (more on the creamy side) compound? and, of course what do you think are my chances? Thank you guys and sorry for my bad english/horrible syntax. Edited October 31, 2011 by NuComer
Boinker Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Denatured alcohol and a lint free towel will do best for cleaning the PCB and the processor of the gpu. I would get a none conductive thermal compound such as Arctic ceramique or mx4 @ frozen along with some 1.5mm or 2.0mm thermal pads and use those for the ram and PCB area and try to see if the card works. That would be my last ditch effort to resolve it. If he used conductive tim on it the card may be a gonner thought so just do it under the discretion. That it may Not resolve the issue. Thanks for the response!. I can't seem to find thermal pads in amazon, all I find are labeled as "xbox" and I know by that fact that they're overcharging the users. Can I have a website that the OCC trusts to buy such things?

NuComer Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Newegg, Tigeridrect, Amazon and (some of us) ebay. Thanks for response. I looked for them on newegg/tiger before asking in the forums and I couldn't find thermal pads, just small heatsinks.

NuComer Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 (edited) What about startech? Link here dude!, I did not know about this website, thanks you! EDIT: I forgot I saw those in new egg but with crappy reviews. 2 eggs and 13 reviews. I know the big boys on OCC recommend a website when buying all the liquid cooling stuff, im pretty sure they're gonna sell what I need but I don't remember the website. For WC stuff I think most here would recommend Dangerden.com, Xoxide.com, Koolance.com and Frozencpu.com(great site to buy WC stuff). NuComer Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 For WC stuff I think most recommend Dangerden and Koolance. Yeah, I was thinking danger den, but I just took a quick peek and didn't see anything about thermal pads. If anyone can nudge me in the right direction it will be greatly appreciated!
