Upgrade question and advise.....

Recommended Posts

Im getting ready to upgrade from one XFX HD5850 with a standard Asus single PCIE slot MB to an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX CrossFireX with one more HD5850 to match up in crossfire. If you look at my pics and System info you can see what I have already. Well I'm pretty sure I will need a new PSU. My current PSU is an Ultra 650 watts and only has 2 x 6pin PCIE so I would have to use the molex adapter for on card. I want a PSU with 4 x 6pin PCIE and Modular. I did one of those PSU Watt tests online and after including all my stuff and overclocking it only asked for around 500 watts. Well I'm gonna check a few more sites to check. What do you guys think? Any advice and watt suggestion? Wil the new board use more power? Wouldnt it just be the 2nd card that does?

OH! this is my current PSU.....http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&CatId=1483

AMD 1055T x6 2.8 @ 3.9

2x sata HD

2x SSD 120gb

4 x 120mm 1 x 80mm 1 x 90mm fans

will have 2 XFX HD5850

Cheap LED SD card reader

4 x 4"Cold Cath lights

1 DVD burner

Corsair H50 liquid cooler

2 x 4 gb ram

Not long ago i was running 4 x Asus EAH Direct Cu HD 5850's OC'ed, and an OC'rd 1100T @ 4.2Ghz on the Crosshair IV formula and got real familiar with the power demands. The 5850's OC'ed are running right around 180w each and your 1055T OC'ed is also around 200w. a quality 650W will work, but I would go with a 750W PSU to give yourself some headroom and not running the PSU at 80%+

Can't argue with this.

Also is that plexi or glass? It's a damn nice case.

Thx Stoner ....Its Acrylic and kinda tuff to keep clean. I love it though. Funny you asked, I was just gonna ask if anyone could recommend the best intake dust filter I could use that wont cut airflow. Not too much at least! I was looking at DEMCiflex. There in Africa though!! :teehee:

I had the same machine in an Sunbeam AC-9 (all acrylic) for a while and found that all filters reduced flow by a significant amount. The aluminum ones are about the best i guess. You can reduce the amount of dust by a bunch if you set your case up for a positive pressure airflow and save some canned air that way.

I'll take a look at the aluminum ones...thx. I love showing off the inside so red and black of the video cards and the motherboard will look hot! I've had the case for about 10 months now. Freaken high maintanance as you well know! I clean the fans and radiator by hand and the case I blow out with air and use a microfiber cloth. It takes about 20-25 minutes since the case is rather small. Thank God for microfiber! I honestly dont want to add anything but I was just wondering if there was anything special I havent seen in a filter.

No filters have not had a breakthrough in a while unfortunately. Have a look at this. By setting up positive pressure flow, you can collect less dust and reduce those by hand cleaning session we love so much :glare:

I'm familier with that. I learned from the techs when I worked for Tigerdirect here in Miami. I dont know my CFM totals but I'm sure I have positive airflow, plus we clean our house A/C filter every month! I am gonna add 1 x 80mm thin fan blow hole on the top cover to help exhaust the video card heat once I add the 2nd card. Thx for the info again Red! I'm gonna crash now!!! its getting late.....I'll keep you posted on my rig later. Peace!
