Budget GPU Upgrade

I've been running a 8800 GTS 512 (g92) for years now. I just recently got a 1080p monitor, and my GPU can't handle that resolution at all. I'm looking to spend as little as possible and still have it perform great in 1080p. I want it to run silky smooth on max settings for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, and run at a respectable framerate with high-ish settings on Battlefield 3.

I've done a bit of research and I think I have some candidates(taken from Toms best for the money Oct 11):

Radeon 6850

GeForce GTX 460

Radeon 6870

GeForce GTX 560

The prices of these range from ~ $110 to ~ $165. I'm looking for the best bang/buck.

I've heard that the GTX 560 is basically a glorified GTX 460 overclock. Would my best option be buying a GTX 460 and overclocking it as far as it goes? Are any of the other options prolific overclockers? I have no issue with tweaking to get the most for my money. I run an air setup with good ventilation.

Thanks in advance.

Why the Radeons? The prices are about even.

I know their power consumption is a bit lower. The benchmark's I've seen have been really even.

Is it worth it to get the 6870 over the 6850 if it's going to be overclocked?

Do you have any brand preferences for these particular cards?

Unless you plan to fold or really want 3D or PhysX in my opinion the AMD cards have a little better image quality in addition to lower power consumption and heat. Never count on an overclock so yes it is worth getting the 6870. If the 6850 at stock will work for you then super but if you think you need to overclock then get the extra boost of the 6870 just to be sure.

As for brand I am partial to MSI and Gigabyte cards, their coolers are really nice. Asus does a decent job as well. Sapphire produces a good product but I think they have slipped behind the board makers for card cooling.

I think it's safe to assume I will be able to push at least another 5% or so out of the card and have it stable. The issue with power consumption is a legitimate one, and considering how long I plan to own this card it should definitely be a factor.

I agree, MSI and Gigabyte cards look like they have some awesome sinks.

I've never heard anything about image quality, but you've inspired some research.

Thanks a lot for the detailed info!
