Finally upgrading from socket 775.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, ive finally decided to get rid of my 775 system, cos its getting too old now.

Ive been looking at the Core i3 2100,and a gigabyte p67 mobo,along with 4gb corsair xms3.

Im a bit confused with the core i3's though,as correct me if im wrong but some are multi locked and dont oc very well at all.Id ideally like to hit 4ghz,but 3.8 would be ok.

Any pointers?

You should go to Intel's web site. Look up the specs. for the CPU of your choice. Normally any 2nd Gen Intel i series ending with K is unlocked. But what you are looking for is a unlocked CPU. I have only found 2 types of CPU's for both AMD and Intel. Unlocked or Locked. If you can't find offical word its pretty much a roll of the dice. I personally would save some money and get at least a i5 2500K.

i5 2500k is the best - 4 cores 4 threads, good value, great performance and can OC to the moon ! The i3 I think can overclock 2-3 turbo bins (200-300mhz) if memory serves correct

That plus an Asus P67 board would be a deadly combination (just make sure you get 1.5v DDR3 ram !)

Upto 1.65V RAM is fine on 2nd gen i7/i5/i3 (sandy bridge).
