Grand Theft Auto Online arrives on October 1, just a short time after GTA V launches. Features 16 players at once and complete freedom to do whatever the hell you want.

In Grand Theft Auto Online, you'll have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete in traditional game modes with the entire community, all with the personality and refined mechanics of Grand Theft Auto V.

TRAILER

I'll check this out later, I wonder if every famous franchise will get an Online version now. Seems the ball started rolling with the Elder Scrolls since no one cared for a while after Blizzard made Warcraft change flavors lol. Wonder if Rockstar will do it right.

There was already multiplayer in past GTA games. All this is is a massive overhaul to make it feel more like an MMO, minus it being a separate game.

From CVG's interview with Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies.

So, you could, in theory, have launched at the same time?

We could, but we want it to be known as a different entity, a separate thing, and it'll grow on its own. It'll be GTA Online; it's not part of GTA V. Obviously it's set in the GTA V engine, but it's going to grow and evolve into its own thing.

And after two weeks, how will you get access to it?

When it launches, you'll have an extra character on your Switch Wheel. Instead of choosing Franklin, Michael or Trevor, you'll select your multiplayer character and you'll be sucked straight in there.

So your multiplayer avatar will appear after two weeks?

Yes.

There won't be any other download required?

There may be a tiny download, but it'll just be a code. We've just got to figure out how that will work with Sony and Microsoft.

When you first start playing Online, will you have anything to start with, any stats that will carry over from the single-player game?

There's a character creation system, so you'll create a new character to start with. But, no, none of your stats, as the three guys in GTA V, (will carry over). Again, this speaks to the difference between the two: the world of Grand Theft Auto Online is set slightly before the events of GTA V, and so while it shares some of its experiences and it shares characters, the stats are all separate.

They're all separate, yeah. Each character has his own set of stats, and as you create your character, depending on what you're creating, your stats will be different.

Okay. When you start GTA Online, you presumably begin with no money. So what are your first steps in the game to get things moving?

In traditional GTA style, you'll be taken on a journey through the first few missions of the game, just to give you a feel for it. We'll have the usual Rockstar help, to keep you on the straight and narrow all the way through. So, it'll be a nice, hopefully well-paced introduction to the game. There's a lot for people to learn, so we don't want to just throw you into the world. You're not just going in and playing deathmatches.

Characters from GTA V will introduce you to the experiences of GTA Online. You'll meet characters from single-player, who'll introduce you to things in the same way as they do in single-player. So, for example, someone will say to you, "Here's Ammunation, here's where you can get weapons..." It's got a flow like a single-player has a flow, so there is a progression through some things - not a story, but a progression through Online. It's a different type of flow.

From GameSpot.

First, a bit of context. Grand Theft Auto Online is not a standalone retail product; it's included with copies of GTAV. Some narrative overlap connects GTA Online with the story campaign, including a handful of shared characters. In fact, you can even switch between the two modes by selecting your multiplayer avatar from the very same character wheel used to jump between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin in the main storyline.

But GTA Online is its own beast: building your criminal empire in this part of the game requires navigating through a very different dynamic, with earnings and progression separate from those found in the story campaign. In fact, Rockstar's aim is to spin this off into its own separate entity altogether. That's why GTA Online is being built on a separate development schedule, and why it will release shortly after GTAV on October 1 via a patch to the main game. But don't worry; you'll be able to get yourself suitably hyped up thanks to a countdown timer Rockstar plans to include in the game prior to the patch.

The whole thing takes place within a world that aims to feel far more alive than any of Rockstar's previous multiplayer offerings. Switching over to GTA Online, you're immediately dropped into a world shared by 16 players. No need to match up with other people using some free-roaming lobby--merely jumping into GTA Online is enough to tell the game you're ready to free-roam alongside other players.

I still hold my hopes high as to what NVIDIA "leaked". It might not be entirely true, but I'm sure there's a PC version in the works.

True, thought it still makes me feel that they really could care less about having PC gamers as customers.  It's not often that you see a company spit in the face of paying customers without the customers having done anything wrong.
