Guide: How to extract audio from Blu-ray and DVD-Audio discs

So this guide has been in my mind for a long time and i have been doing this stuff for a while since it's not always i want to listen to music on my tv. this also can be applied to making your own custom disc to include whatever tracks want.

for this example i am going to use the newly released Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon (Blu Ray from Immersion set) and The Doors: LA Women (2000 DVD-Audio)

Software Required:

- Any DVD/Bluray Copy protection Remover Software (I'm using DVDfab and i don't know of any free ones)

- Tsmuxer (Free)

- DVD-Audio Explorer (Free)

Ripping Disc: First we need to get it into a ISO or Folder Structure without the copy protection. I'm going to use DVDfab for this task

-if you cannot match the highlighted settings make sure it's a full rip without removing anything other than the protection. as most rippers (for DVDs) will move the AUDIO_TS folder which is the DVD-Audio part in present and BD disc can lose the HD audio or down converted.

-This can take 50gb for BD and 8gb for DVDs of HDD space. I suggest you turn it into a folder, otherwise you'll have to mount the iso with DAEMON Tools.

Ripping Audio: now we have it in Iso/Folder format we can go ahead and pull the audio from the .mts file (for BD) and .VOB (for dvds). now open the TsMuxer you downloaded.

now once open browse to the folder and grab the right .mts or .vob that is a match for what you want. sometimes a dead give away is the time or size.

Under BD it will be in STREAM folder and DVD show have VOBS in the VIDEO_TS folder

Make sure you choose Demux and check box for the audio you want. than "start demuxing". once done you should have a folder with .wav file without a loss of quality.

( Notes: i picked the stereo mix to avoid confusion but you can take the surround tracks and make your own custom disc with it. the output will be either single mono files in which you'll have to recombine as a LPCM or use expensive software to make DTS-HD (DTS-HD Master Audio Suite $1500) or TrueHD tracks ( Dolby® Media Encoder SE $600) and software that can handle authoring those formats. Blu-Print and Sonic Scenarist (also a few thousand ) will author blu-rays with either HD audio but that's heavily investment to make your own custom discs. so it's best to keep it in LPCM and one to 2 tracks per dvd)

DVD-Audio Ripping: Same as before you want to get the disc into a folder or iso WITHOUT losing the AUDIO_TS folder. This time we are going to open DVD-Audio Explorer

-For dvd audio discs it's a little different as you may have a Stereo and or a Muti-channel track. make sure you select the one you want and also note the copy protection is false if ripped correctly. some say Explorer alone can defeat the Anti-Piracy but i have ran into issues before where things would not copy correctly unless pre-ripped/stripped and i use dvdfab for that

- make sure you picked "convert to wave" otherwise it's going to give you a .mlps which is useless unless you want to make another DVD-A disc. your not really converting it from wave, it's just repacking it.

now you are done and can convert your newly useful lossless audio to FLAC, Aiff, MP3 or leave it as is. using the PCM as is you can author your own dvds and bluray with the audio if you so choose to make a mix disc. i even ended up taking all my The Doors Perception discs and putting it on a single blu-ray. no longer do i have to switch between 7 albums and it's all 1 click away. While this is a HUGE grey area, i see no reason why i cannot make a custom disc with things i own.

i also forgot you can use the .mpls with VLC player if you don't care about converting it, but that's about all it will play on other than authoring another DVD-Audio disc.
