ccokeman Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Had to pull this one out . My 30 inch Gateway monitor came down with a bad case of the green wave of death. Since Gateway decided to stop supporting these monitors the only way to fix it was to pull it apart and reflow the main controller. Did this with a heat gun and cooked it from the back side of the PCB until I smelled flux. This worked but it still had a tendency to get incredibly hot. Out comes the drill and hole saw to punch a hole in the shroud to make an improvised cooling solution. Slap a 60mm fan on it pulling air out of the casing just above the offending chip and presto chango we have a solution that runs cooler and should give me some more borrowed time on this monitor. Now pull out those functional mods

Stonerboy779 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Reserved for my pentium 2 in a technics amp housing. Here it is, yes it is missing the super base, base and treble knobs they are in my draw I took them out and was going to replace the pots behind them to control fans. The volume control was preserved in my violent destroying of the old circuitry so i could later use it with the pc. There we are the beautiful Pentium II and the sound card and vga card the brackets had to be bent to fit. The power cables are run to the power switch on the front of the amp. Had fun with the tin-snips completely cutting up the psu so that I could mount it into the case without it touching the mobo. it is screwed onto the top of the amp housing. And the power socket was a perfect fit basically into the existing power in on the amp. The sound out was going to end up being rca jacks in the rca input holes, on the back but never bothered finishing because I misplaced the HDD. Now it sits with so much other stuff around my room. if i feel inspired i will upload pics of my other modded PSU/s that are powering car amps. dr_bowtie Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I will have to get pictures but the most ghetto mod i have done I just did the other day.... I have a couple old Ultra Microfly mATX cases with windows on the sides and top. Those things have pretty bad airflow anyhow so I pulled the side panel windows and used Aluminum House screen and replaced teh plexiglass with the screen...doesnt look bad and didnt take more than 45minutes to do both cases... Psywar Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I used to be king of ghetto.. (or at least I thought I was) My Modded CRT Dell Monitor back from 2002/03ish... Also my first real computer build I came across this wonderfully large 172MM Fan.. This thing was made out of metal and I swear it wanted to cut off your fingers when it was running. Then finally on the same build, I think RAM Sinks were just comming in to style in 2002/03ish and I decided to take it a step further and made my own out of crap I had laying around the house. Thus we ended up with Penny Heatsinks! This I think was the final outcome of that project: Homemade baybus - To Turn on the PC you had to use a Key. (One of those old Circle Keys) We had a buy-in back in 2002 here on OCC. Someone was selling these dope Electric Keyswitches. I think I still have it out in my old Hardware bin. Ended up putting a Thermal Display on the front bottom. The case looks absolutely Horrid looking back on it now.. But not too shabby for 2002 considering all we had to mod our computers was imagination and a dremel.
