Locutus Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) MSI Computer's Facebook has recently posted a teaser photo showing off one of their new motherboards which appears to be Socket R. Looks like we'll be seeing a release of the 2011 CPUs and motherboards within the next few days, as MSI usually does things like this a day or two before official release. EDIT: Actually it appears they've released a number of different photos hinting at the new release, and it is almost certainly a new x79 motherboard. engstudent Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I'm wondering if ivy bridge extreme maybe about a year from now, will be a drop in upgrade for the x79 lga2011 boards.
CowKing Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I thought X79 was an 1155 chipset......
engstudent Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Future chipsets of interest for the initial release of ivy bridge on 1155 is the Z77 and Z75. The X79 is the lga2011 chipset. Which one will ivy bridge extreme go on?
HarryTaco Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I think the Ivy-E is an 1155 offering.
engstudent Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Link please. Or explain please what made you think that. I mean besides ivy starting on the 1155 socket.
engstudent Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Without some more info or maybe I've missed it. It seems like there are 3 potential routes open for ivy-e. 1156, 2011 or some new platform, like how they're going from 1366 to 2011 right now. If ivy extreme is release about a year from now and they do it with a new socket and I've built a sandy-e 2011 system, I may end up as disappointed in intel as I am with amd over bulldozer. Not that either company would give a flatuence. But still it Would suck in all seriousness.

HarryTaco Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) @Engstudent-- "Link please. Or explain please what made you think that. I mean besides ivy starting on the 1155 socket." My Apologies, I read so many articles I got it backwards. The IVY E is the 2011 socket offering. I got it off X-bit Labs. Below is a source for showing Ivy and 1155. Master Binky Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I could see Intel making an Ivy Extreme in a year and keeping it a 2011 but requiring the panther chipset, while the Sandy-E will work on either cougar or panther. This is just my thoughts, but I believe Intel to be that sort of tricky.
Muchoman1 Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 so i read today that the sandy bridge e will be released as the C1 stepping, with some faults known to it, and C2 stepping will be released 2 months later also that it will not be *guaranteed* to work with pcie 3.0 gpus (Sauce) http://vr-zone.com/articles/sandy-bridge-e-should-hit-c2-stepping-after-launch/13677.html http://www.guru3d.com/news/intel-sandy-bridgee-to-get-c2-stepping-after-launch/ http://www.techpowerup.com/152978/Sandy-Bridge-E-VT-d-Broken-In-C1-Stepping-Fixed-In-C2-Stepping-Shortly-After-Launch.html
olokul Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 here is a link over to tomsharware talking about a sneak peek of asus's upcoming Rampage IV Extreme LGA-2011 x79 board. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ASUS-X79-Rampage-IV-Extreme-ROG,13819.html Looking good but what is up with the 8 ram slots? going Quad channel. Is there going to be any advantage to this over dual or even tripple?
