potatochobit Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 (edited) I am thinking about using my old parts to build a HTPC I thought I might want a little dedicated GPU but they all require a 400w PSU! are they serious? I want this card here AMD 5450 but even the smaller cards require a 400w PSU except for the 8400GS, I'm not buying that useless piece of junk do you think I can get away with a 300w OEM PSU? it is paired to an old athlon64 X2 Edited October 2, 2011 by potatochobit
altec.gs Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Any high quality psu should be enough(300w+). This is not a power demanding configuration. When you are buying a new psu, always look to use only half of the psu power. For example, if your sistem drains ony 100W, you should buy a 200W power supply unit. I have an Antec Earthwatts 500W that I'd sell you for $35 if you want? LINK It's the same model that I'm using in my machine right now. Plus you could always add in a more powerful GPU later on. potatochobit Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 thanx for the offer, but if I have to replace the PSU I might go for a mini ITX like a shuttle case or something fun I was looking at full size ATX cases but they kind look like old VCRs, might as well use my HP case for now it's actually not a no name brand, it is OEM and found in every HP and compaq from a few years ago of course, that doesnt mean it is good quality but it is without a doubt reliable I think I might also need a wireless keyboard with a track pad. this one is cheap, but I dont know about the quality gear head rosewill is more expensive and I trust them but the reviews look bad that way, i can use the computer from the couch
Coors Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Typical power: 19.1Watts http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-5000/hd-5450-overview/pages/hd-5450-overview.aspx#2 That 400w minimum is nonsense.
