TheHippi Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Ooook, so the new iPhone is a bit of a let-down for me personally... I don't really see the benefit considering the price. Yesterday was a public holiday here, so I went down to the Vodafone store and spoke to one of the geeks there, who said that 9/10 customers who walk in wanting to buy a high-end Android phone bought the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the other one bought a HTC Sensation. I tinkered around with both of them for a bit, they're both quite nice phones and I'm sure I'll get used to them in terms of typing and software and whatnot. However, and this is a big one, the Samsung just doesn't seem very sturdy to me. I've always liked my phones to be able to withstand some bashing around, simply because I am not very careful with them. My 2G iPhone quickly had a dent in it, worked perfectly, the 3G that is not falling apart spent 2.5 years in my pocket with some keys etc, it's scratched to bits but everything still works and nothing's fallen off just yet. The iPhone 4 with the dual gorilla glas setup was also quite sturdy if you didn't exactly drop it onto a rock. The Sensation comes with a semi-metal backplate, which in my opinion is the better setup, but the Samsung had me more convinced in terms of performance and that screen... the colours are just excellent! What's your opinion on this? They're both stupidly expensive here in Hongkong, the Samsung at 5300$ and the HTC at 5000$ (divide by 10 for Euros), but my parents are coming to visit me in Hongkong next week and I'd just have them bring it from Germany (HTC = 392 Euro, Samsung = 420 Euro). The Samsung phones have deceptively good build quality. They're made of plastic, yes, but it's a high quality plastic and as long as you don't throw it at something you shouldn't have many problems. The screen is also gorilla glass so you don't have to worry about it getting scratched up too bad.
ciddono Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Don't let that light, plastic feel of the Samsung fool you. It is quite durable. I have had my Epic since it's release, and the phone itself is sturdy as ever. Bear in mind I work in a warehouse. I have bumped, banged and dropped it, easily 40-50 times. I am pretty sure the decent case i bought with it can take credit for its condition, but that is something of a given for someone with an active lifestyle. Also, only in the last few weeks have i scratched the screen. I don't use a screen protector, and keep it in my pocket. I think that goes to show its durability and longevity. Also, those metal back plates on the HTC add a surprising amount of weight to the phone. Personally, I appreciate the light feel, on my belt clip or in my pocket. SkytTe Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I'm more of a Nokia/Symbian fan guy. If you like QWERTY, try the E7. If you want a new and pretty neat Nokia with MeeGo, go for the new N9. I personally am going to buy the Nokia N8 soon. Good price and is told to have the best camera out there! 12 MP, 16 internal memory, solid material. The only thing bad about it is the low res in comparison to the iPhone. It has a resolution at 6xx x 4xx. If you like Android, I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy II S, since it has won so many smartphone tests. My mother has it, and it really is great! kingdingeling Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 (edited) I'd say iPhone 4S because it's literally a week away, but also if your considering a Nokia, check out the N9, it's running the new 1.2 Harmattan OS, and it really does compete well with the other OS's right now. Yea it's a week away, but its also ~700 Euro away if I buy it in Germany, where it's SIM locked anyhow. If I buy it in Hongkong, it's about 2 months away and unlocked, but also a fair 7000$... something doesn't really fit my view of a decent deal here. A lot of people have said that I would be pissed off with Android quickly compared to the iPhone, cause you have to tinker with it bladibladibla, but that's not exactly negative, as I like to tinker with stuff like that. As for the Nokias, I was in the Nokia store the other day and couldn't get to grips with any of their phones, but also I don't want a physical keyboard. [EDIT] Another thing, what do you guys think about that new Droid Nexus thingy or whatever it's called? How long do you recon that will take to hit the shelves, cause it seems like a good phone, although 4.6" might just be a little too big for me... MJCRO Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 How about the Samsung Galaxy S II? I hear they sold like hot cakes in Europe. IMO, I would suggest getting any kind of android. T-Mobile in Germany will probably offer the new Nexus Prime over their first before it hits the states, but I'm not sure. Probably the end of November to the beginning of December is probably the best estimate. Supposedly Samsung was going to announce it at CTIA but that's been pushed back to an unknown time so
kingdingeling Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Well, the decision was taken out of my hands yesterday. I broke my iPhone 3G's microphone whilst out drinking on Saturday night, so I had to get a new phone and didn't want to spend time without a smartphone, whatsapp is absolutely essential Anyhow, went to the Apple Store cause I was gonna cave back in and buy an iPhone 4 32GB, they didn't have any in stock and the dude said they wouldn't have any for another few days, so I went round the corner and bought a Galaxy S2. For the moment, I have to get used to Android, not entirely convinced yet, especially cause it doesn't recognize my .m4a podcasts properly (anyone know a fix/widget/program for that?), but the camera is nice, its got a more solid feel than I expected and up to now it seems to do almost everything I ask it to. PowerAMP is by far the best media player for android.
kingdingeling Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Does it eat .m4a podcasts? Specifically, I need my Tiesto's Clublife Podcasts to survive the daily bus rides to and from work!
MJCRO Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I'm glad you like the S2, it had great reviews, and you can never really go wrong with Android's because of the quality builds they push out every few months.

What do you mean? I don't listen to podcasts often so excuse my ignorance.
kingdingeling Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I have various podcast subscriptions, mainly musical, so I have for example Above & Beyond's Trance Around The World, which downloads and plays fine, as it's in the mp3 format. The Tiesto's Club Life downloads in m4a format though, which the Galaxy S2 does not show with title information. It'll see the file and it'll play it, but it'll be "podcast XYZ" by unknown artist...
