SpeedCrazy Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Some of you may have read my recent topic on my hdd problems and such. Well i have a fresh install running and am copying all my backed up files onto my reformated hdd. Well, i just discovered that in backing up my disk it compressed all of my uncompressed .flac audio files!!! Is there anyway to undo this or do i need to rip my cd collection all over again? And is there any way to prevent this happening again?
wevsspot Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 What backup utility did you use?
Waco Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 There's no way it used a lossless compression algorithm - I can't imagine ANY backup utility that would use a lossy algorithm for backup regardless of the tenacity of it's compressor. wevsspot Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I'd have to agree. That's why I use Comodo backup because it has the option to backup 1:1 without any compression. How about the default backup utility in Windows 7? Does it compress during the backup?
SpeedCrazy Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I used windows 7 backup..... previously i used acronis but while that makes a system image it compresses everything, pics music everything. Is comodo free?
Andrewr05 Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Would it not have some sort of checksum (or something) to make sure that all of the files were exact after restoration?

SpeedCrazy Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Would it not have some sort of checksum (or something) to make sure that all of the files were exact after restoration? Well all i know is they came back as .wav files.
wevsspot Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Weird. Have you compared file sizes between the original .flac and the newly restored .wav? Yes - Comodo Backup is free, and only costs if you want to use their online backup service. It's kind of a pain to configure and navigate at first, but once it's set up right it's awesome. I didn't think that Windows had native support for .flac files.
Waco Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 (edited) Well all i know is they came back as .wav files. Uh...what??? Something went wrong - but I know Windows doesn't randomly change file extensions when it does a backup... Wav is lossless as well btw, not that it helps at all.
