Because for $500 you should be able to pul together a i3 2100, h61mobo, ram, htpc case and psu then just use the intel hd 2000 graphics integrated into the cpu. It will be quicker and more responsive than trying to pull together parts for the old CPU you have if you need to replace board (crap it is as you say) get more ram (which is ddr2 if your lucky) and then get a gfx card to play everything.
