GabrielT Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Well I was in my web programming class today and I just got fed up with all this learning crap. I dropped all my classes and I am going to talk with the people whom I owe money too tomorrow. I am just sickened by this college, I don't understand why I should want to keep going here. Maybe I will find a new school but CS isn't for me. Talk me out of it if you want but I really don't want to be at Bemidji State anymore. It's just lame, not my kind of place. ir_cow Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 well don't go than. college is not for everyone bbut it is required if you want a real paying job. not saying you cant make bank but i a lot less likely. i suggest at some point going back but into a field you like otherwise it is pointless. jammin Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 While college can be great, and you do stand a chance of getting on better career wise with a degree, it doesn't mean it is for everyone. It doesn't mean you can't get along (and very nicely) without a degree too, I'll just stress the point of doing something you care about and enjoy doing, whether you stick with further education or not. El_Capitan Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I'm nowhere near as successful as Steve Jobs, but I live pretty comfortably as a college dropout. Just figure out what you like doing, and what you're good at doing, and you shouldn't have trouble finding a decent paying job. If those two things happen to collide, all the better. A person can be good at any job with just hard work, but to be great at a job you have to have passion for what you do. The same goes for college, you can get any degree if you try hard enough but to really excel you need passion for what you are working on. It sounds to me like there is no passion in the choice you made. As for dropping out of college, it will all depend on what you want to do in how it will effect you. Thus was the case for me, I ended up dropping out a few days after classes started too when I originally went into college after High School. Eventually after working a crappy arse job for a few years I realized that I really do need to get through college and went back. I am now working on my last year of my BS in Information Technology. I would suggest that you don't give up on the idea totally, but take a break from education. Travel see stuff and have fun, its what I ended up doing. Sometimes you gotta mature a little too, which was my issue as well. When and if you do consider giving it another shot, I recommend you start off with one or two classes a semester until you get in the swing of things. Also Community Colleges and Technical Colleges might have decent transfer programs, it is a lot cheaper to get a 2 year associates degree as well, and transfer on. I don't go to college myself but I'm a recently out of high school kid and while everyone around me thinks I should go to college, I choose not to, because I don't think I have it in me right now to go through with it if I tried to go. I think like Green says, sometimes you just have to give education a break and over time you just mature at your own rate and will know if college is for you or not. Companies just aren't as willing to take a gamble on someone like they used to. But that's not to say you can't make something for yourself without a degree either. I hated college, but I stuck it out in a major I didn't give two crap about and it got me a decent job that is letting me pay off my car and student loans. I still write code on the side and I still take on problems outside of my daily work duties so I still enjoy it to some extent. Just do what makes you happy, man.
