this month my provider charter cable, will be raising the monthly fee for my speed plan and raising the cable modem lease to $7 a month; it's getting a bit ridiculous. it's time to cut costs.... i lowered the plan speed down to 12gbs down from 18gbs, and now i'm in need of an awesome cable modem to replace their pos and save another $84 bucks a year. i'm probably gonna buy the motorola sb6120 docsis 3.0, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UI2FPE , ...the lower modem lease will allow me to increase my speeds again and still stay within my budget...but if there are any better faster out there i'd sure like to know about them... thanx all

12gbs? that seems the most positive but i read that some people had problems with firmware upgrades and motorola woulnd't change em cause the software 'works'...

"I'm told the firmware is only upgradeable by your cable company." 4th or 5th reviewer?

I just installed my new Motorola SB6120 last night with ease and a 5 minute call to Charter and it works great. You can get from the egg for $75 now with free shipping I believe. And I am with you on this, $7 a month is way too much and I kick myself for not buying my own earlier since $5 after years is way too much!

Good luck!

thanx monkson, ya know i did my shopping and comparisons at the Egg site and saw that one for sure...out here in cali taxes take a toll though, so amazon is usually the way to go 98% of the time...(prices are usually the same)

is it common for people to buy their own cable modem? I have time warner cable and I dont recall any monthly modem charges.
i dunno bout everybody potatochobit, but i've been putting off getting my own for a long time. i started with charter cable back in like 2001-2002 and well back then the lease fee was like $3 a month, and i thought it was a bit but doable right. but then after a few years it went up to $4, and after a few more it went up to $5. they kept creeping it up on me, and so now i'm not good with the cost of it anymore. also, the more i look into the newer tech capabilities, the more i find that the new DOCSIS 3.0 modems are designed for gigabit speeds and increased packets handling both up and down line. the old moden i've been using is like a DOCSIS 1.0 old tech and not up to modern standards. for the price of the motorola 6120 DOCSIS 3.0 extreme (it'll pay for itself in a year) i can get the fastest up and down service i can afford...all of our household machines are gigabit and capable of much faster speeds than they have been getting...p.s. i bought it last nite and it's supposed to be in by saturday....i'm getting excited :woo:

I bought 2 cable modems in the 9 years we have had the option to get cable out here.

Back in 2001 Comcast finally upgraded the cables out here for Digital Internet. I bought a modem right from them instead of paying the ($5) monthly fee.

I moved out of the house a few years later and bought another one for my townhouse. When I moved out the parents got rid of Comcast and went with DSL because it was cheaper.

Now that I am back I switched us back to Comcast because the DSL package they had was too slow to browse the internet and watch Hulu at the same time lol!

The modem we have now Comcast installed and they are charging $5 a month for.

I would definitely check you bill though. As cjloki said above buying a new modem will pay itself off in a year. Then after that your pretty much deducting $5 bucks a month from a bill which is pretty sweet.
