Voltages, and effects on temperature

Recommended Posts

Which of the various voltage settings have the greatest effect on your temperatures? VCore, VTT, VCCSA, CPU PLL, etc...

I've got a i5-2500K @ 4.5ghz.

All other voltages stock.

IBT/OCCT/Prime95/F@H stable.

I'm getting load temperatures maxing out at ~68*C.

I'd like to have the lowest possible voltages, with the end goal of the lowest possible core temperatures.

It would be a good thing to do but its going to make a bigger difference to upgrade the cooling solution.

The vcore is going to make the larges difference but they all will effect the processors temperature. The second in line I believe would be the QPI then the CPU PLL.

Best thing to do would be to reset you overclock and set everything to its factory voltage. Not on auto. Then run a stability test. Use occt and run it for an hour. Move the multi up and repeat until your unstable. The change one voltage at a time to regain stability. Or you could do occt for 10 minutes or however long you want. Just remember minor instability is easier to resolve then a major.

The other way to go about it would be to lower your voltages one again time and run a stability test for an hour and see if its stable. If it is lower is some more. Rinse and repeat and that should get you the results you are liking for.

Good luck.

P.s. if you are running high MHz ram (above 1600) then you can lower it to reduce heat in the dram core of the chip or the qpi of the chip.

After a TON of futzing;

For 4.5ghz, all voltages can remain stock except Vcore, which I need to be at 1.27v. I don't know why I thought I had to raise anything else...

Backing down to 4.4ghz, I can run a Vcore of 1.230v. Temperatures drop by ~3*C. Not even close to worth it.

AIDA64 shows a 5watt decrease in power consumption. Sounds consistent with the observed temperature drop.

I'm just going back to [email protected].

Your chip is just different. My has pull an occt linpak stable 4.33 and be stable with 1.36volts and nyt rydas cant try 4.33 without 1.40 volts. But if your temp is not much higher then his you may just have a leaky chip compaired to his, Or last and worst case senerio you have your voltage jacked up way too high to compensate for a voltage that is set to low or wrong other then vcore. Such as pll, API, dram voltage etc. More then likely your chip is just leaky.

On some sites, I've seen super clean text-based motherboard settings lists. Looks like it's generated by some CMOS export program or something?

Anyways;

CPU... i5-2500K

RAM... Patriot Gamer2 PC3-12800

PSU... Corsair TX750

LLC... Level-6

VCore... 1.270v

QPI/Vtt... 1.050v

VccSA... 0.920v

CPUPLL... 1.700v (undervolted to try and lower temperatures, didn't help, but still stable so whatthehell)

DRAM... 1.500v (My RAM is spec'd at [email protected], but I'm running it [email protected]. That normal?)

CPU Clock Ratio... 45

BCLK... 100.0mhz

Memory multiplier... 16

@Boinker: It's probably just a leaky chip then. It runs fine temps at 1.370, so I'm just leaving it at that. All the other settings are on Auto. Can't find what the stock volts are..
