Graphics card upgrade question

I would like a little upgrade on my graphics card for Battlefield 3 coming out in September/October 2011. I currently have a Radeon Sapphire Vapor-X HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E. I have roughly £150 to spend.

To save money would it be worth my buying a second 4870 and running them crossfire as opposed to a newer card or would I get more performance out of a brand new card and if so which one for £150?

This is a little over budget but it's amazing for the price, this is cheaper but still fast.

4870's are great and cheap on ebay but in crossfire I think you might get some heat issues especially with your 300, and they don't perform quite as well as a 5870 in cf.

Also you have nearly the same motherboard as me

Another option:

This is newer, more efficient and runs cooler but it's not quite as fast as the 5870.

Thanks for quick post. I think I'll just might forget about the crossfire option then. So a new card it is and I'm sure I could stretch the budget a little if required. :-)

Really? I though the 6870 would be better than the 5870 purely due to it being a higher number and presumably a newer model?

I think for the new AMD cards, they changed the number system, so a 6890 is comparable to the 5870.

EDIT: There is no such thing as the 6890, LOL. I think I mean 6950.

I'm pretty sure the 5xxx series runs on two GPUs, hence the better performance over the 6xxx series, which only have one GPU on them.

Like rocketeer said amd changed the naming sytem confusingly, the 5870 is definitely faster.

I think the 6950 is slightly faster then the 5870 :P

This is way too confusing. haha

I did stumble upon this and wondered if it was any good.. Asus GeForce GTX 560.

or this one if I can scrape together another 40 quid Gigabyte GTX 560Ti.

I'm really not sure perhaps I should wait for Battlefield 3 to come out, so I might delay the purchase for a couple of months and get one when the prices reduce.

58xx series where he high end, now the high end is 69xx.

I think it is too early to upgrade for a gam that is not even released. There will probably be newer and cheaper cards out by then!

560's are good but the 5870 is faster than both of them and cheaper than the ti. The cheap 5 series cards won't be around in a couple of months time, but the prices of the other cards would go down.

+1. If you are planning to upgrade for the game then wait for the game to come out and see where you are at. In the mean time save some money so you can afford the best card possible.
